Speaking of Gawain playing White, and of English matches involving the Caro-Kann more generally*: what gives? Is even 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 e5 Bf5 4 g4 interesting/quite good for White now? Is there no literally no pawn move that White can make on move 4 which does not have some arguable point or merit in it?
Not a C-K expert by any means, but ISTR that line came back into some prominence a few years ago.

Clearly a big mistake to rest Ravi!
Gawain is doing well in this event I am pleased to see.

Meanwhile Scotland have gone down 1.5-2.5 to North Macedonia and the Welsh could be having a nightmare against Ireland.

It is 3-0 to Ireland at present and if Tarun Kanyaramala can convert his advantage he will go to +1 with a good chance of a second IM norm, probably just needing a draw from the last two rounds.

I see Firouzja has a solid 6.5/7 on board 1 for his adopted country.

Encouraging result of the women's team 3,5-0,5 and Louise was winning most of the game although was a draw. We keep the fingers crossed for the last games!

I see Bjerre is in gold medal place on board 3 with Gawain 4th standings, so could be a crucial day

Yesterday's quickly draw GEO-UKR on board 2 looks like a measure against covid spreading. All boards in all games were still playing and were not more than in move 20, only this match was finished on all 4 boards with 4 draws all of them in the move 31 (follows draw regulations).

UKR first board was tested positive in the mandatory testing of players during the rest day, perhaps the captain of GEO team insisted on such a procedure...we will see what happens today.

Yes - that was unfortunate - it seemed all three possible results were possible until late on. Good to see Alan break his duck - he's having a tough tournament (cares of captaincy weighing heavily?) but he did well to spot and take his chance late on to save a difficult position. Adam did well to get the draw after being a pawn down for a lot of the game, Graham always seems comfortable at this level, but I fear Freddy, having been presented with a chance when his opponent went for the win, pushed the wrong pawn.

I am curious to know how the massive age difference within the Scottish team is being maanged (curious, nothing other than that).

So if chess24 is to be believed board 2 in the women’s match was for some reason played early. I’m assuming it was a draw by repetition rather than black win, although white seems to be +57 in the final position...! :(
