I think he's the strong favourite, even commentators are sounding him out. The fact that he's broken 2800 already is another telling factor. I think he just needs more experience first though. He sometimes does things that he shouldn't do. His recent loss to Caruana is a good example of that I would say.

So not a Kings Gambit from Nepo after all, but an English.

Carlsen turned into a Reti where Black plays .. d4 rather than acquiese to the probabiliy of defending a Catalan,

You're all missing the turning point of the match: Nepo has de-bunned himself; shorn off his curls.

It's not Carlsen who's the real threat here. It's rather as John Milton put it in Samson Agonistes:

"...by the barber’s razor best subdued"

Hmmm, has Nepo dropped another massive clanger?

Oh yes, and very unforced too. Maybe David is on to something!

Several games of suffering to go now, sadly. I'd imagine he'd like to withdraw early.

Rather nice joke from Giri about the missing bishop being the elephant that is not in the room (because elephant is the Russian word for that piece)

Meanwhile the Chess24 computer shows us only up to 8-ply, which has been another repeated problem on that site. (It is also showing moves only up to Black's 29th: Chessbomb is showing Black's 38th.)

Must be a real chance now that Carlsen will conclude this match with a iifetime plus score against Nepo.

Bet nobody saw even a possibility of that after game 5.

Well I didn’t expect it, but it was always a very real possibility that Nepo would collapse after going one down, whereas I would not have expected Carlsen to do likewise were he to have lost a game. It seems psychological factors have played a big part, rather than just chess ability.

That seems the key position where Nepo played c5. Did he overlook that Carlsen could just play .. c6 trapping the Bishop or did he miscalculate a long line thinking that .. c6 could be allowed? He did get the passed a pawn as insufficient compensation.

This isn't even close. I think Magnus has a big psychological advantage over his contemporaries, much as Gazza had in his prime.

I was wondering if we should campaign to bring back shorter matches
