Karpov and Kasparov drew 17 consecutive world championship games against each other at a classical time limit. Carlsen tied that streak with his draw in game 3. He doesn't seem to want the record right now...

My rather old book references this and Mardle v Milner-Barry, Bognor 1964 :)

And a draw, with Carlsen looking not so happy.

he won't care; or if he did, he would blame it on playing Petroff players!

Well, all I can say is the authorities banged up Petroff and threw away the key, and I'm not surprised!

During the game, Houska said that she'd heard Karjakin spent 1 million dollars on his preparation for his world championship match. Has anyone else heard of that? Seems a bit excessive.

I normally call it the Petroff, but in this match, definitely the Russian Defence

I do not find this unlikely.

First, there is the computing power. They require state of the art technology, as I think was seen today. Then, they have had the services of a team of big names in their preparation. How many days of the time of a top football manager ( or even Gareth Southgate ) does $1m buy?

I think perhaps the relevant question is not so much whether the money was spent, so much as whether Karjakin (personally) spent it. Doesn’t seem so much if it was the Russian Federation of course...

Yes you have a point there. Well Houska mentioned it in passing, not stating who spent the money.

I think the perceived likelihood of this is connected to how much money you think there is in the game. Of course the players aren't going to reveal this but if you add up the prize fund from the major tour events, that alone is over $5 million a year, and then there's many things on top. Perhaps it's so that those at the very top are very rich these days -it certainly never used to be like that!

Not so sure the top individual players have to rely on prize money so much anymore judging by the sponsor names on their shirts and jackets these days. Kaspersky Lab was the sponsor of Karjakin around the time of the Carlsen match and I doubt whether investing a million dollars in their client with the incentive of him becoming world champion would have bothered them unduly. It would though be interesting to know exactly how the million dollars expenditure is broken down though. A team of analysts interrogating a chess database? Training camps in some paradise island?

Here is Carlsen sporting his Unibet sponsorship.
