Anyway, Duda didn't win his won game (perhaps not appreciating how good his position was, seeing as Esipenko's major pieces looked pretty menacing down the middle). Caruana did win his. Karjakin ought to win his, although he shouldn't have and I'm currently intrigued as to whether Vidit is going to contrive to lose an ending with opposite-coloured bishops. (I am guessing not, because even if White wins the g6 pawn the bishop can go to g4, but we'll see.)

EDIT: Vidit holds. Karjakin still winning what has actually been a very delicate ending.

ANOTHER EDIT: Karjakin wins. Carlsen leads from Giri.

ok, but

1)
who else will stand up to carlsen?
2) if someone does pip Giri in the candidates', we know he will have earned it.
Even if Carlsen's preferred opponent isn't ready yet (and tbh he probably isn't) Duda and Ding are two possibles who seem to bother him more than Giri as things stand. The time when Anish was a "bogey player" for Magnus seems a bit distant now.

Time control amid drama everywhere to see, and I strongly recommend people start with Grandelius v Caruana.

Caruana played e5 three times in the Candidates, and c5 once; I don't think he's played the French other than blitz or rapid previously
I stand corrected. I wonder why I thought that?
Nepo played it twice, as did Grischuk

Pretty sure he beat Adams in the Olympiad with the French. Yes, all right, in 2008. Strange game where Adams had seemed simply better (but perhaps wasn't).
Having done a few databases searches, I realise something had gone wrong

Adams beat Caruana in a French in 2009, as did Carlsen in 2012; it appears that his last longplay French was beating Robson in the US Championship in 2017, prior to that he beat Topalov at the 2016 London Chess Classic

Tomorrow we have Karjakin v Carlsen and Giri v Duda

Magnus then has white v Vidit, black v Caruana and white v Dubov

Anish has black v Van Foreest, white v Grandelius and black v Rapport

yes, but again I was not saying he would be the best challenger, just that he is %%££ strong now and really is a "must-have" in a candidates.

Karjakin and Carlsen get to spend the afternoon watching the telly or whatever early finishers do

Non-games from the WC are pretty rare, so he can maybe be excused on this occasion.

Mamedyarov makes up no ground, a draw with Shankland in which he never had a sniff, though he did repeat the same line with which he lost to Carlsen yesterday.

In the remaining games:

Giri despite having White has been on the back foot all day though the computer thinks a draw, keeping him behind Carlsen, a likely result.
Caruana is and has been in trouble with White against Rapport, who may however have missed the strongest line.
Grandelius has a chance of getting off the bottom, being with touching distance of a crushing win against Dubov of the Black side of one of those Sicilians which look like a French where Black has no bad bishop.
Praggnanandhaa however would keep Grandelius in sole last place if he won, and Vidit has just blundered.
Espienko seems to be beating Van Foreest straightforwardly and without fuss.

EDIT: Giri does indeed draw and Carlsen will lead. Grandelius however, inexplicably even in time trouble, swaps off his dominating queen for Dubov's desperate one and in doing so throws away most of his advantage.

Vidit's king was horribly exposed, a blunder was always possible there.

Caruana seems OK now (move 33).

In the Grandelius game, is that a case of patzer sees pawn grabs pawn?

(Apologies to Grandelius, who I am in no way saying is a patzer!)

Oh dear, commentator's curse.

Praggnanandhaa currently failing to find the win against Vidit.

Caruana now totally lost.

Grandelius now looking equal.

Esipenko trying his best to draw from a previously won position.

Meanwhile in the challengers, previously all-conquering Erigaisi held to a draw with White by Shuvalova.

(indeed, she could easily have played on in the final position)

Heh. And now for some reason the computer doesn't have 41...Bg2 in its top four moves.

Oh, wait.... 42.Ng6+ might spoil things a bit? Nah, still winning, isn't it?
