Tim
Mick Norris was contrasting the decisions of England and Ireland in respect of resting/not resting contenders for board medals.
Tim, I too initially misunderstood at first.
For "Conor Murphy plays for Ireland" read *Conor Murphy is playing for Ireland in today's round".

Interesting decision
Conor Murphy plays for Ireland
Not sure what you are saying/implying here. Conor Murphy's parents are both Irish and he has always been IRL-registered with FIDE so far as I'm aware. He won the 2019 Irish Championship and has played in several other events here.
Conor's result (7.5.8 so far) has been terrific in this olympiad and a true GM quality performance.
He transferred from England to Ireland on 24/1/18 and became eligible to play for them on the 25/1/20 according to the FIDE site:
421669 Murphy, Conor E IRL ENG 2018-01-24 2018-01-10
Last FIDE event: European Youth Team CC 2017 - Open Section
Citizenship IRL
Date of eligibility
to participatein the FIDE events under the new flag 2018-01-25
Transfer fee Euro 1000
Date starting from which a player
can represent the new federation fee free 2020-01-25
All the best to Tarun today who needs to win for a GM norm.

I would be amazed if David Howell played any other games as he is almost certain of the gold medal on board 3.
And I'd be amazed if he never played another game.
He is not there to go solo pot hunting. He is there because he is English.
The pride he feels when marching out to represent his country easily trumps any tin gong.
Should he, per chance, be the best board 3 player then I fully expect him to refuse the trinket
and say the only medal he wants from any Olympiad is the gold medal for winning the team event.
David is a true patriot who spent his rest day at the Chennai University to gaze lovingly at the statue of Queen Victoria.
(there is actually a statue of Queen Vic at the University. You do not think I write this garbage without a bit of research.)
Such a glorious deed must not go unrecognized. I will be renaming my three kids after the openings he plays.
Carol (Kann), Roy (Lopez) and Thor (Knights).
Funniest post ever
the reality being David now rested in 2 games and I fully expect him to be "rested" tomorrow also...board 3 gold medal in the bag.
The team captain understands this even if some of the patriotic posters here do not. IMHO

I found two online references from 15 years ago to players scoring double GM norms at an Olympiad based on nine games minimum.
What occurred in Solomon’s case is confirmed by the rules. According to FIDE Handbook, a GM norm (nine games or better) at the Olympiad counts as a 20-game norm. In other words, the one norm counts as two.
That could explain Murphy needing to play a ninth game.
I couldn't find any reference in the Fide Handbook.
It would be really helpful if Nick Faulks could clarify the situation.

Up until the 30th June 2017 the following appeared under Olympiad in the Table of Direct Titles.
“Min 9 games GM norm –
20 game norm;
Min 9 games GM performance –
13 game norm”
This no longer appears in the Table of Direct Titles that came into effect from 1st July 2017.

Thanks, Lawrence, I stand corrected.
I see from the FIDE ratings site that he was born in 1999 and he made the big leap forward to 2300+ in 2017.
I've never spoken with Conor so I wasn't aware of the transfer.
Good luck indeed to Tarun but his opponent today is an IM. He will need to met a GM in the last round or else no norm is possible.

I don't know whether the exact position has arisen previously, but the idea of charging six pawns was seen in Mariotti v Gligoric in a 1969 Zonal. The structure of playing a6, c6 and b5 reminds me of the Byrne defence to the Saemisch. In the Mariotti game, Black had played .. c5.
