The USA announced the following line-up with an average rating of 2772 for the top 4 players.

Fabiano Caruana: 2783
Levon Aronian: 2775
Wesley So: 2775
Lenier Dominguez: 2754
Sam Shankland: 2718
The top 4 are all ranked among the world's top 12 players, while Shankland is currently 25th. Three-time gold-medalist Levon Aronian will play his first team event event for the USA after his transfer from Armenia.

Russia would be key contenders for gold medals, but FIDE suspended their national teams along with Belarus from taking part in the Chess Olympiad due to the invasion of Ukraine.

According to chess24's sources, China's participation this year appears to be in doubt, which means the Olympiad could be without two of the favourites.

France, on paper also contenders for the top spots, were dealt a huge blow as their star players Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Alireza Firouzja both decided to skip the Olympiad.

The announcement on the ECF website was initially inexact and that had a knock-on effect on the two sentences which you quoted.

I had to google what TAP is. I suspect Alex is in charge of pairings, which does sound important

Yes, it was easier to understand when it was called the Pairings Committee. It is indeed important, but so are all the arbiter roles at the Olympiad.

Why might China be missing - is it still Covid related stuff?

Where is Chennai? I have never come across the name.
I looked in my old school atlas and it is not shown.
I assume it must be a new city like Islamabad that was built after 1947.

I had to check with someone today what the former name of Chennai was. But in all seriousness, why would you post on an internet forum to say you had looked in an old school atlas, when you could, um, look on the internet? Don't get me wrong, I like looking in old books as well. Name-changing or rebranding is a funny business, but it does lead to interesting history.

The referenced Chess24.com article reports Radjabov as saying he was shattered by the experience of playing in the Candidates and caught Covid after returning.

I wasn't expecting anyone to take my comment seriously!

Akshaya Kalaiyalahan and Zoe Varney playing Kingston invitational and Mike Healey will also be part of Wales womens party. Great Chess by 10 local players. I will watch tomorrow. Chennai can wait for a week.

Visa woes still not entirely solved. My passport was lost somewhere in the system, but has been located and I shall pick it up on Monday - to travel on Tuesday, so a bit tight.

One of the Bermuda team is a Canadian citizen and was been given such an appalling runaround that he was on the verge of giving up. Then he tried a different application on an old, but still valid, Russian passport. That went straight through through after a simple online process.

The belief that Russians are reviled around the world may be exaggerated.
