What a very strange episode. though similar things have happened a few times in the past.

Niemann makes it three wins in a row!
Though not before Sevian got to his king
How bizarre. If you could caption that video sequence, you could almost imagine Sevian saying:

"But I was told there is a secret transmitter that has been concealed in your king; where has it gone?"

Or:

"The next move I must make is hidden here."

Caruana and Aronian off the pitch already after fifteen minutes. And thirty-four moves.

Always the likeliest outcome, as it suits both players

Robson needing a win to catch Caruana; I assume there would then be a playoff

Huge oversight by Robson just when he seemed to be cracking it

I've mostly been following Krush v Zatonskih, which just reached the time control. Black spent a lot of time establishing a passive but defensible position and nearly let the defensible bit slip playing the last few moves on the increment. Objectively she should still hold on, which would probably give us a Krush v Yu play-off, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if Krush were to grind out a win and a ninth title tonight.

A much better day for Jennifer Yu following on from her hallucination against Krush the round before.

Krush had a chance at move 60. Seems an obvious try - wonder what she missed?

Talking of "what she missed," I'd not previously seen precisely what this was about

but reading the report it turns out to be the old thing about missing a backwards diagonal threat. What a time to pick.

I see Hans Niemann performed (according to Chess Results) almost exactly to his current 2699 rating. (2700chess.com says the same.)

Which either "proves" he is cheating or not cheating, according to your previous standpoint.

Whoops
Ummm, yes but then...

I really don't get why they came back the next day, just to play two 10 min games and an Armageddon; why not at least play 1/2 hour games or maybe another two 10 minute games. The whole thing was over in an hour.

it was odd that Yu's mistake in the Armageddon was almost an echo of her error in their 12th round game - a diagonal blind spot.
