True. I remember the final stages of the 2004 Kasimdzhanov Adams match, it was like watching a car crash.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2023 4:06 pmBy this stage of the World Cup, isn't everyone just knackered?

Even worse, I think, the Svidler v Kariakin final of eight or so years ago. It is particularly pointless to have long matches when both players are already qualified for the candidates, which for most players (except you know who) is what it is really all about.

Carlsen-Praggnanandhaa ends in a very uneventdul30 move draw.
Caruana looks likely to equalise against Abasov, currently an exchange for a pawn up.

Hopefully he can now avoid entering anything in the World Championship cycle, and give up classical chess if it makes him unhappy

Sounds like something he might have picked up from former manager Lawrence Trent! Lawrence told me some years ago about the possibility of 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5 Ne4 3 Bf4 Nc6, meeting 4 d5 with 4...e5 (4 Nf3 d6).LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 12:34 pmCaruana also won with black in a Tromp with 2...Nc6.Paul Cooksey wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 12:26 pmMagnus won the first rapid tiebreak with black.
