Nigel Short is playing in the A Group which includes Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik and is currently on 2.5/8 after draws with black against Anand, Carlsen & Shirov and white against Ivanchuk & Kramnik. Alexei Shirov leads the A group with 6/8, a half point ahead of Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik.

David Howell is in the B Group and is is on 4.5/8 after wins against GM Dimitri Reindermann, Ni Hua & Tomi Nyback.

Anya Corke played in the IM B2 all-play-all event where she had an average opponent of 2292 and therefore required 6.5/9 for an IM norm. Sadly she finished on 3/9 with a rating performance of 2167.

This annual event starts on the 26th January. Regrettably the English presence is very limited in terms of titled players although GMs Mickey Adams and Jon Speelman as well as IM Jovanka Houska are competing. The prize structure has again ensured that a lot of the world's strongest women players are competing.

Gibraltar may not have many titled English players playing, but it has a fair few in the organizing team: GM Stuart Conquest, CM Stewart Reuben and I are all here in a non-playing capacity.
