Starting a thread to follow the results from this event:

Runs from 11 to 17 August in Stockholm. England player present is Supratit Banerjee who achieved his final (third) IM norm at the recent British Chess Championships. Clearly this event was intended to add to his experience and/or norm opportunities.

No reason to have changed the schedule, but it must be tiring to go straight from Warwick to Sweden! Two rounds a day today, tomorrow and Friday. Single-round days yesterday and Saturday and Sunday. Nine rounds in total.

I have no idea how to follow Supratit's live rating (he needs to cross 2400 to achieve the IM title).

Maybe best not to do that, and just enjoy the chess!

Assuming there are no other games waiting to be rated, and that chess-results' calculations are correct, his current live rating is 2357 (August published rating) + 35.8 (British Championship) - 6.2 (Stockholm) = 2386.6.

It is fascinating watching Supratit confidently give up the exchange for those pawns.

Instructive moment from a rook and pawn endgame in Supratit's R2 game:

The Grandmaster (Daniel Semcesen [2422]) went wrong with 47.Ra4 (-4.0) instead of 47.Rc5 (-0.2) which keeps the Black king out.

And Supratit has won!!

Live rating now 2398.4.

I am not sure what his peak live rating was during the British. I think before he lost to Mickey, it was 2,396.8, so this is a new peak rating.

In round 3 (in 90 minutes time), Supratit plays a 2365 FM so needs a win to increase his live rating (round 4 tomorrow is against 2485 GM Erik Blomqvist, so two draws also enough).

Of course, Supratit may want to win the tournament...

What I like about chess.com is you can grab a position during a game without even signing on with just two clicks of the mouse. The position you mentioned. Supratit played 20...Rxd4 followed by 21...Qxe5.

It is obvious..ahem... after you see it, sac the exchange for a pawn and to get rid of the e5 Knight.

I think we might be on the verge of a new IM (also record-breaking for the UK).

In this level position:

2rr2k1/1p2bppp/p3pn2/2np4/5B2/2NP1BPP/PP2PP2/2R2RK1 b - - 4 19

Supratit's opponent played 19...Bd6 (no sense of danger!) and the simple combination 20.Bxd6 Rxd6 21.d4 Ncd7 22.Nxd5 Rxc1 23.Nxf6+ gxf6 24.Rxc1 won a pawn. The current position looks simple (to me) to win:

2R2n2/5pkp/B3pp2/8/P7/6PP/1r2PP2/6K1 w - - 1 29

(After a 10-minute think, Supratit played the best move in this position of 29.Rc7 - impressive.)

So Supratit's live rating could soon be over 2400.

I think technically the age for record breaking purposes should be at the point of ratification by FIDE (but I am not sure if that is how it was calculated in the past, as opposed to the date when the live rating was achieved, or the final norm achieved if already over 2400).

Either way, if Supratit wins this game, a new age record (12 years and 5 months now, or in a few more months if going by when FIDE would ratify later in the year any application made).

EDIT: The above does need to take into account Ian T's caveat "Assuming there are no other games waiting to be rated". I assume Supratit and his family and coaches would know this. Another point about this UK-based record for youngest International Master (IM) is that it might not be one that lasts very long...

There appears to be a delay on the live boards (quite right too).

Chess-results showing Supratit has won. The live board will show that soon too. (I think the delay is 15 mins? or maybe 5 mins?)

This is all very unofficial... Can we celebrate? Who would know for sure that the live rating is over 2400?

I've been told that his live rating is 2407.

Supratit has now played all three GMs, has just beaten his second GM and has 3/4. What is the GM norm for this tournament?

Wow. How many GMs has he beaten now in his classical chess career to date?

Just played through Supratit's game against Blomqvist. Another win from a position an exchange down for (in this case) equality. Superficially it looks like a bad blunder by Blomqvist (same as the other GM) but Supratit is getting positions where it is possible for these GMs to go wrong. Will now have a go at calculating the GM norm score...

If I have my calculations correct, the sum of Supratit's opponents' ELO will be 21,488. Divide that by 9 to get 2387.55 which is the TPR if he scores 4.5/9 (it is also over the 2380 average of opponents' ELO needed).

For a GM norm the performance needs to be over 2600 (unless different TPR requirements apply to APAs like this).

Add 400/9 (44.44) for each half point above that (equating to a win in the tournament) and you get the TPRs for the scores from 5 to 9/9.

To get to TPR of over 2600, Supratit needs to win five times and draw four times (or the equivalent). i.e. GM norm is 7/9 for a TPR of 2610.

i.e. From his present score of 3/4 he needs to score 4/5, e.g. three more wins and two draws (or four wins).

TPR of 2387.55, look up 9 round on FIDE title Regs https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/B012024 and it says 7 points.
