Great result in Tromso for Forumite GM Matthew Turner, sharing third place with 7/9 in a strong field and defeating 2600-rated GM Berg in the final round this afternoon.

Sam Collins also had a great tournament and scored 6/9 and a 2597 performance but sadly I think he missed out on a GM norm despite performing at well over 2600 for the majority of the tournament. Matthew's performance was 2598 and as you say he had a great tournament finishing with a win over a 2600+ GM.

Does, the rule about allowing to uplift two players to 2250 for GM norms push his overall performance up over 2600, or was that already taken into account

It's one player and 2200 now.

Alan, yes you may be right. I think it makes his average 2488 as opposed to 2461. In that case 6/9 would be enough.

Hopefully Alan is right. An encouraging sign is that the website had said that Sam only needed a draw in the last round (which he got) so one trusts that all this had already been checked.

And knowing Sam, if he had needed a win, or had there been any lingering doubt about whether a draw sufficed, then the last round result would been decisive, one way or the other ....

If so, it is Sam' s second norm, though he is still some way from the 2500 rating which he would need to acquire in order to become Ireland's first home-born GM.

An excellent tournament altogether for the two Barbican players, and a welcome return to form for Max too.

If confirmed, this is excellent news. Every step towards a homegrown GM is fantastic news for Irish Chess.

I can confirm that Sam got a GM norm (his second). He had to suffer somewhat for the draw in the final round, but the result was much deserved. He had a dominating position against Sandipan in round 8, but rejected a line which would have left him a clear pawn up in a position which was almost unlosable. He opted to win an exchange instead and things rapidly went a bit wrong. It was a great performance to bounce back from this.
Sam is playing in an all-play-all in Dublin at the the end of August and his final GM must be a distinct possibility.
