What does Yang-Fan need from his last 4 games for an IM norm?
Any postings on here represent my personal views

On my calculations he needs 2/4.

As his last four opponents are Dunworth, Chernaiev, Arkell and Rudd in that order, it's still a big ask.

Yes. Of course one cannot fault Yang-Fan thus far! But let's wait until he has beaten someone over 2210 ...

These sort of tournaments really look particularly tough for norm seekers. One could easily lose two games to the GMs and that is almost that. With some 2300s in the field, and a target of 6/9, one could conceivably afford a couple of such slips,

David is correct. 2/4 is the requirement.

I don't want to jinx him but I think he has a great chance. Nice to see his little brother doing well too

Yang-Fan has been clearly close to or at IM strength for a year or more and it is a pity it has taken him rather a long time since his first IM norm at Coulsdon to reach a position where his second norm is more likely than not.

But I am curious about the pairings: was it entirely random that the top rated players in this event only meet each other in the last four rounds? It does improve Yang-Fan's chances of halving his way to the norm.

Hi Leonard. The pairings were random. Pairing numbers were determined by the National Lottery draw, with the methodology published on our website, emailed to the participants and indeed posted on this very forum in advance of the draw being made!

I don't know whether he will halve his way to a norm or not. But it is only because he is on 5/5 (a TPR of 2875) that that is even a possibility.

Surely his rating would suggest he's been at FM strength for a year or more? Many of us IMs haven't been jumping over ourselves to achieve the 2400 standard these days (rating inflation, what inflation?), but most would be pretty concerned if we were approaching 2300!

I expect Sean already knows that Michael Adams has given a plug for the e2e4 tournaments in today's Torygraph.
