How did the teams qualify / were selected for the European Club Cup?

In England's case, they were the top 2 finishers in the 4NCL who wanted to go. Wood Green and Pride & Prejudice would have had first choice on going, but presumably declined the invitation.

That's correct, although we had three places but Betsson were unable to take up their place and Cheddleton, despite earlier interest, were also unable to go. Offiically we are allowed three teams that finish in the top half of the league although the organisers are generally willing to accept entries from lower placed teams once you remind them that it will mean more entry fee and accommodation income :D

The format is criticised at http://www.whychess.org/node/1976

Although 64 entrants, 7 round Swiss is not going to give many pairings between top teams and the losers in any such pairings will be out of the running. So the comments are a consequence of the format.

It's like the arguments about the British being an apa. If you had 8 teams playing a apa and the fifty or more "tourist" teams playing a Swiss, presumably the finances wouldn't work.

Presumably not. When Barbican played, we did so with the main hope of playing at least one of the top eight.

I think he misunderstands the event. Although it's played as a swiss, it's effectively more like a knockout. It means that if you want to win the event, you've pretty much got to win every game. That's not a bad thing in my opinion.
