Gawain's game will be on live here: http://91.230.195.250:8080/2/
and David's game here: http://91.230.195.250:8080/3/
I suspect a win for Gawain will qualify him for the World Cup (23 places available).

Re: European Individual 19th March - 1st April 2012
The live games seem to have crashed for the past hour. Chessdom has what seems the latest available position which doesn't look good for Gawain needing a win with Black:
Ernst v Jones 1 d4 f5 2 e4 fxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Bg5 c6 5 f3 Qb6 6 fxe4 Qxb2 7 Bd2 Qb6 8 d5 Qxd4 9 Nf3 Qg4 10 exf6 exf6 11 Bd3 d5 12 Qe2+ Qe6 with White's extra piece superior to Black's three pawns. Gawain got a big break in round 9 when Volokitin messed up winning positions first out of the opening then in the ending, and it's a pity he didn't then go for a solid half point with his last white in round 10 against Bologan.

The live coverage is finally back, and the position has been transformed. Gawain's rooks and pawns have run rings round Ernst's knights and he is now winning.

....and Ernst resigned at move 41. Now it's just a question of whether Gawain's 7.5/11 plus good tie-break (top tie-breaker is performance rating) is enough for one of the 23 World Cup places.

Re: European Individual 19th March - 1st April 2012
Particularly impressive when you considered that (having led the field with 4/4) he hadn't won since round four before that must-win in the final game. It had occurred to me that he had done too well too quickly, meaning that he then got exhausted playing against a string of the very top players and also lost his winning momentum. Thankfully it ended in a very well deserved success.

This is what happened in one game:Roger de Coverly wrote:Whilst there's a certain point to Sofia rules with invitation only events like the London Classic, is it really necessary away from the top boards in a monster Swiss? I wonder what will happen in the last round. For some players there will be every incentive to draw quickly so as to ensure qualification for the World Cup.

The difficulty with the European Championship is that it's a qualifier for the World Cup. The London Classic for example only qualifies for an invitation next year. So in the London Classic , the incentive is there to play a proper game, since quality of play is rewarded, presumably, over the actual result.

There was a rule in the tournament that you weren't allow to agree a draw before move 40. Supposedly repetitions were an exception.Andrew Bak wrote:

Earlier in the tournament, the arbiters had
(a) allowed a draw by repetition straight out of the opening with the arbiter being summoned to verify it
(b) double defaulted two players, one in the world top 20, for agreeing a draw before move 40
(c) double defaulted two players for agreeing a repetition without arbiter summoning.
So taking the precaution of playing the repetition to move 40 seemed to be the requirement. There was a suggestion the arbiter refused to allow a repetition draw to be agreed.
