Well he's definitely won today, I might ask him if I see him online (no idea if he's keeping track, might be better not to). Will be interesting to see who he gets with White tomorrow...

Current leaderboard shows Gawain in first place!

Of course, there are other results still to come in, but he is the first to reach 4/4.

Gawain is the only player on 4/4! Not clear who he plays next due to a glut of draws among the top seeds, but i expect somebody can work it out. In the last two rounds he has played really intelligent endings to squeeze out wins.

Quick. Stop the tournament and hand out the prizes! :)

Ah, too late. A few more wins would be handy. I did like the way he took advantage of his opponent's exposed king in that round 4 game.

The strange thing about this tournament is that the 2nd and 4th seeds (Mamedyarov and Giri) are on 2/4. Does this effectively put them out of the running? I've been trying and failing to find a compact listing of what the winning scores were for recent years. It seems 8.5/11 is about the expected winning score.

Getting 4/4 wins against avg. of 2517 is certainly a great achievement!

With Mamedyarov and Giri being on 2/4, one would normally expect them to be able to string a few wins together and climb back into contention "through the back door". However the depth in strength of this competition means that it will be very difficult for either of them to obtain 6.5 or 7 out of their remaining seven games to reach the 8.5/11 figure that Christopher mentions.

On a seperate note, I have a book called "The King Hunt" by John Nunn, describing 50 games where the king is chased around the board and mated. A very strange version of this took place today in Vallejo Pons vs Nabaty. The queens were swapped off on move 8, and by move 25, Black's king was facing certain doom on a1!

Gawain drew with Fressinet to move to 5/6. Tomorrow is a rest day.

Apparently Azaladze 0:1 Korobov was a default due to the clocks changing. I've seen a suggestion there were a few more.

I'm trying hard to sympathise, but can't help laughing. :D

Don't forget it's running under FIDE's anti-chess rule of zero time forfeits.

I heard that several Georgians lost by default today. Adam Hunt had a good win with white against a 2607.
