The strongest annual event in Wales - the South Wales International - is also underway. It's a very nice tourney, but there aren't any wires coming out the sides of our plastic roll up boards, so anyone interested will just have to hope the site updates regularly...

Thanks for posting the pgns Jack. Some interesting games - the first one I looked at appeared to be a player resigning when at least equal , but only had a quick look so maybe missed something.

That happened in the last round of Buxton too David, when James Adair resigned vs Alan Merry in a position which looked deceptively hopeless, but from which he could have delivered perpetual check.

Strangely, I've now had very weird K+P endings at both Buxton( round 4) and here in Penarth (round 2).They are both well worth taking a look at. Both opponents missed subtle draws - and in the case of this last one, the drawing idea is very counter-intuitive.

It should be noted in my round 2 game vs FM Peter Poobalasingam, the game basically went that his king and dark squared bishop collected my two kingside pawns, and under time pressure, I moved my king over to the queenside, allowing him to queen in time. Oops! I'm still very pleased with how I played.

I'm wondering I was beating a GM in my first round game. I certainly thought so at the time. (Talking of time, if you have 120 minutes for 40 moves you really shouldn't use 118 of them for the first 23.)

Was it my game? If so, you're right.

Infact it was Justin's game in round 2 where 19 b4 looked good to me but maybe I am wrong its quite complicated - I just had a quick look at keith's ending in round 2 - just shows how complicated simple endings are .

Still not 100% sure of the correct drawing method - but is it something like 54 fxg4 probably followed a few moves later by h3 or h4 (depending on what black plays) offering to give up the h pawn?

Yes! fxg4 draws ( move 57 actually, but that must be what you meant). Paradoxically, by losing the f4 pawn, Black can hold the ending with 1 pawn vs 2, but in the game, the 2 vs 2 is losing

I was in fact panicking about this but I believe I have 19...Be7 20 Bd4 Qc7 and all is well.

Yes if he played Bd4 straight away, but how about 19..... Be7 20 Rxe3 Nxe3 21 Bd4 Nxf1 22 Bxb6 Nxd2 23 Bd4
