Looks like the majority of our players had some easy games by their standards to start with!

What happened last time England men played France?
Howell v Feller and (allegedly) a lot of carefully constructed spectating.

Goodness, reminds me of that thread that seems to have vanished! (Yeah, I know most people won't know what this refers to, but hey, need to remind myself it did exist).

In which you asked about ECF procedures.

Andrew Farthing wanted to introduce something.

It didn't get discussed at the April meeting, so the status of the proposal is unknown.

Yeah. Pity that. For the avoidance of doubt, the thread that vanished (which contained allegations of cheating in English chess) was nothing to do with the Olympiad (neither the previous one or this one). The point is that such things should be dealt with elsewhere, not here (court of public opinion, anarchic internet forums, etc.).

I hope England really do the cheating French... playing well so far!

That's an outrageous comment. The episode came to light only because of action taken by the FFE (French Chess Federation). The French players and arbiters whom I know are appalled by the behaviour of the three miscreants.

Hmm. Whilst their captain and one of their players have been found to have cheated the last time we played them , on the other hand the rest of the team and the federation had uncovered them and went to some expense and legal aggravation to prove their point. I don't think the Frenchmen we are playing today have anything to be guilty or ashamed about. Compare Ireland v France - the next time they play football, the Irish can really talk about the cheating French because the whole of their team went along with Henry's no-goal.

(I see now that David S has just made the same point)

Incidentally Chessbase report today that we won our "derby" match v Cuba. If anyone has the slightest idea what they are talking about, do tell!

I am going to appear obsessed with Chessbase now. They also refer to the "young Indian GM Pentala Harikrishna". I am glad to learn that he has retained his youth from the time when he shadowed the leaders in the British Championships of 1998. He seemed to be his mid twenties when I played him in 2006 and I had wondered whether he had since got even older!

The best I can come up with is that we're both small islands quite close to large continents, with whom we have an uneasy relationship?

But then we could have a derby match with New Zealand!

I hope David (Howell) will not mind me saying this, but I'm sure I'll be one of many people wishing France the very best of luck on board 4 today.

Agreed. Frankly I'm amazed he is even playing.

GM Bauer actually played yesterday - he drew with GM Nikolov of Bulgaria.
