I was watching the end of Dubov v Ponomariov yesterday and Radjabov v Bruzov. The former was very good and I'm glad Dubov won in the end as I think he deserved it.

Aronian looks to be under the cosh. To my mind its quite funny to see the Dutch Stonewall is effective even against top GMs, given the simplicity of the opening.

On a different note, I was wondering, how do tournament organisers deal with booking hotel rooms for a knock-out tournament?

Maybe that's a problem for the hotel(s) (fewer rooms will be needed but it's not known which).

Another problem might be booking return travel for the players.

I am watching Hammer - I'd like to see the local boy do well and Kamsky seems to generate very interesting games.
I'd also like to see Svidler and Giri go well
Kramnik, although I am confident he won't win it :!: and Gelfand

The most interesting is which 2 finalists, as they reach the Candidates, so a Karjakin - Caruana final would be good

Real shame for Granda Zuniga today +2, then played the moves in the worng order it looks like and -2 instantly 0-1.

Not a great return on a day's work for him and a real pity ... he was my adopted player to root for.

Not quite a Stonewall from the opening moves as Black played the "triangle system" (d5, c6,e6). White reacted as if the game would become a Slav, but then .. f5 was played. It's a known idea.

Aronian out, after Tomashevsky's piece sac ended up giving a perpetual.

And Granda Zuniga wins today (Sunday) to take Giri to the tiebreaks ... rooting for Granda Zuniga and Wei who must be the youngest and oldest remaining competitors.

Is Granda Zuniga really older than Gelfand?

Just but not much in it.

Julio Granda Zuniga born Feb 25 1967

Boris Gelfand born June 24, 1968

And Grand Zuniga is through ... but Wei is out.

Granda Zuniga knocked out Giri. Grischuk is out as well (lost to Quang Liem Le), which is a moderate upset. Ivanchuk, Mamedyarov, Le, Granda Zuniga, Kramnik, Korobov and Caruana all through. Three matches still in the balance (though Karjakin could be going out).

Caruana is the luckiest guy alive. Take a look at his game, white v. Malakhov in Rd 3.3. After 61. Kb6, Houdini was giving (-23.7) and flagging 61...Rf6+. But Malakhov, doubtless under colossal time pressure in an awkward position, tried 61...Qd4+ instead (0.00); and went on to lose! In Rd 3.4, presumably demoralised beyond redemption, Malakhov quickly collapsed.

It is a bit of a shame. Most children would probably have played 59.....Rb2+ and thoughtlessly hovered up with the lawnmower checkmate technique!
