Since it is only just over 6 weeks to go until the Anand-Carlsen match, I'm starting a new thread, instead of posting to the old one. A bit more news here:

http://www.chessbase.com/Home/TabId/211 ... 40913.aspx

Website does look good:

EDIT: Modified thread title to make it more visible.

Hello,

I am eargerly looking forward to the World Chamionship and am thinking of joining either ICC or PlayChess to take advantage of live commentary, funds won't allow both sadly!

I would be interested to hear the pros and cons for both sites before deciding, I see that Chessbase have announced their GM lineup already and it looks like a good team.
I have been a member of ICC in the past, and enjoyed the site in the main, although I never found a way to turn off comments from people just churning out variations from their engines.

Anyway any advice will be welcome and useful

thanks

Trefor

Would it be possible to merge this thread and the more recent one here?

For those with Android devices, there's an app to show the WCC games live. See here. It comes loaded with annotated versions of 25 previous Anand-Carlsen games. (HT: Mikhail Golubev)

I dreamed last night that the chess world championship match, Anand v Carlsen (which starts a week on Saturday) was taking place at my school and that I was the chief arbiter. The twelve games were all drawn and so were all the tie-breaks so it came down to an Armageddon playoff which Carlsen won. I was about to present a trophy to Carlsen in assembly when Anand starting doing a science demonstration with an unknown machine and half an orange. At which point all the children in Year Two left for a PE lesson.

I need help!

"I was about to present a trophy to Carlsen in assembly when Anand starting doing a science demonstration with an unknown machine and half an orange."

It could have been worse, it could have been rope and half an orange.

A piece on Magnus Carlsen has appeared in the November 2013 issue of Red Bulletin:

http://www.redbull.co.uk/cs/Satellite/e ... 3360207103

It doesn't appear to be online, but I saw someone else's copy and it is a 5-page piece (mix of text and photographs) alongside other features on sports stars such as Sebastian Vettel and, er, Damian Foxall (a sailor). Not sure if any other chess player has been featured in a sports magazine before?

Getting back to the match, some posts at Carlsen's blog:

This is clearly because Chess is not a sport!!! :x

I believe most enlightened societies accept that chess IS a sport and to answer the question about other players in sports magazines

Sports Illustrated featured a certain Chess Player on their front cover in 1972 before an equally enthralling World Championship Match

Also contains an interesting article:
