Kirsan for FIFA

It's something you couldn't make up. FIDE with all seriousness are proposing, or at least the President of the Russian Chess Federation is proposing that the president of FIDE run for president of FIFA.

I doubt he has the necessary money unless Putin supplies it. FIFA Delegates being much more expensive than FIDE ones.

In other news, Kasparov and Leong have been found guilty of unspecified ethical violations. You feel FIDE will regret this, on the principle of stones and glass houses.

I suspect it is not with all seriousness, as his chances of getting the job are nil.

It makes a lot of sense, as FIFA is riddled with corruption whereas Kirsan is a model of probity!

The only problem I can see is that two such high-powered jobs might be too onerous for one person.

I wonder if Sepp Blatter would be open to offers to run for President of FIDE?

"The proposal of Mr Filatov was met with applause from the audience of the Executive Board"

No cursing, even in French.... makes you appreciate ECF governance. Perhaps the ECF Home director and Commercial director should be told by the CEO to draft an advisory letter against??

My guess, and it may not be worth much, is that Filatov is sending a message to (and about) Kirsan, to the effect that while he backs him, the act of doing so (for this job everybody knows he's not going to get) shows that Kirsan needs his backing.

A message of some kind, anyway, rather than a serious proposal.

A reasonable point in general, but perhaps not in this case. Kirsan was questioned seriously, giving answers which were good enough for the charges against him to be dropped. K&L simply refused to co-operate with Ethics Commission's investigation, which may have been a mistake.

That is what I think, but it does not appear to be what he thinks.

It will probably never be understood in the West that Kirsan is held in genuinely high regard in Asia. In Europe he defeated Kasparov as the lesser of two evils, in Asia he did so on his own perceived merits. This could easily transfer to the Asian vote in FIFA.

Where he will fall down is in Latin America, where I do not believe that his almost universal chess popularity will transfer to football.

I wondered what had happened to the complaints made about last year's election campaigns. Can someone provide the source for news of the decisions?

I don't think it's published yet. The only mention is at the foot of the Kirsan for FIFA announcement.

Searches for "Leong ethics chess" just come up with the original leak of the contract between Leong and Kasparov in January 2014.

There have been references on Twitter to the Kasparov / Leong decision.

The FIDE Congress ends today. An initial statement about decisions taken at a Congress is normally published a couple of days after it finishes, once the staff have returned to base.

Earlier than I had expected, there is now a short report at http://www.fide.com/component/content/a ... board.html.

There are three paragraphs on the decisions of the Ethics Commission. They read as follows:

"The Ethics Commission reported on the decisions and rulings made in the past year, including the two cases that related to the 2014 FIDE elections.

In the one case the complaint of the Philippines and Kenya Chess Federations against Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was dismissed.

In the other case the complaint of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov against Ignatius Leong and Garry Kasparov was upheld and they were found guilty. The process to impose a suitable sanction will be completed in next two months."

Probably yes

As Mark Crowther points out, Kirsan has been involved in football
honorary president of FC Uralan
and
57.7 million rubles on the soccer club Uralan

Can we get FIDE to take over the Chilcot enquiry?
