This is something that really interests me, though his thread might not be the place for a proper dicussion. Does the comparison hold? Is Magnos as much better a player than Chris (or me) than Chris is better than a player of 1200 strength? Or is there a curve, on which we improve much more between (say) 1600 and 1700 than we do between 2600 and 2700? Or is it the opposite, and the higher you go, the more significant is each point gained?Chris Rice wrote: As far above them in Elo terms as I was, I was just as far below Carlsen
Or is this all meaningless?

Can someone explain to me why in the latest game 8 Bxc6 followed by 9 Nxe5 does not win a pawn for white?

8.Bxc6 dxc6 9.Nxe5 Nxe4 wins it back.Michael Farthing wrote:Can someone explain to me why in the latest game 8 Bxc6 followed by 9 Nxe5 does not win a pawn for white?
ETA: Although 9.Bg3 in that line might be troublesome. Probably have to play 8...bxc6 then.

Indeed, nice to get the onsite report, thanks Chris. I'm enjoying it from home enormously though.
I'm hoping for a 7 hour epic today, since one of the few days I'll be able to watch to the end. I guess the schedule shows the orgnaisers are more interested in news coverage than spectator numbers. Which is fair enough of course.

I've yet to actually 'see' (only seeing a chessboard) the start of any of the games. Just looked in on this game, and it looks like a draw already (move 13). Maybe the real fireworks will be on Monday, or will it be two draws? They might then play nine tie-break games on Wednesday!

With only major pieces left, it could be that both players opt for an early night for a change!

I don't think I'd like to be white against Carlsen in this position. I suspect what will happen is that a lot of exchanges will happen and he'll emerge with a slight edge because of a better queenside pawn structure.

It is looking more exciting. I'll still lay odds it'll end in a perpetual pretty soon.

I would, because I'd be playing Carlsen.IM Jack Rudd wrote:I don't think I'd like to be white against Carlsen in this position.

Well, I can see that 24...ed (instead of ...e3) 25 cd Qe3+ 26 Qxe3 looked drawn, although black might have had a fractional edge despite his pawn minus, but 24...e3, while avoiding that probable draw, doesn't seem to give black any advantage at all. Another case, non-fatal on this occasion, of Carlsen trying a bit too hard to avoid a draw?
Re: WC Match 2016 - New York 10-30 November
I find prospects of a Q+P ending really, really exciting. I'm so excited, I've broken off my webcam viewing of cars circulating around a nearby roundabout because I'm so excited. I bet I'm even more excited than Jonathan Bryant who is the most excited person I know for these things. I simply cannot wait for the examples we're seeing here to pass into the mainstream of everyday chess. I still hyperventilate when I recall the bliss I felt at school when Petrosian became world champion. Now there was a man who truly understood the beauty of traffic roundabouts. Bring it on. Bring on 6 d3 in every Spanish
