The reality:-

When Kasparov last played a World Championship match in New York - 5 draws in 22 moves or fewer. Another in 25 moves. That’s out of 18 games in total.

When Kasparov last played a World Championship match (in London) - draws in 11 and 14 moves, another in 24 moves.

Short draws also in London 1993 and New York/Lyon 1990

Draws in 19, 20, 21 and another 21 in Seville 1987.

And that’s without counting 20+ draws in 25 moves or fewer in the first match with Karpov.

Kasparov did what he had to do to win - the same as Carlsen and Karjakin will. Well, Karjakin will do what he has to do to try (and fail) to win, but you know what I mean.
You have a point there. Let us hope that the match is an improvement on the Anand matches. I think Karjakin is more of a threat, if that makes for more potential entertainment value I don't know but I hope so.

For what it's worth, one of the sponsors is reported to be Russian company PhosAgro. PhosAgro was also a sponsor of the 2016 Candidates tournament.

PhosAgro. What do they make chemical weapons?

https://phosagro.com/production/

"The Company’s apatite-nepheline ore contains numerous useful elements, such as phosphate, aluminium oxide, titanium dioxide and other rare earth elements, while the content of harmful and hazardous elements, such as cadmium, arsenic, mercury and lead, is very low."

This may be a bad translation, but the chemicals listed are not elements and even if they were, they are not "rare earths".

They look respectable enough.

Not sure about that

Talking of respectable people, Kirsan has just been denied entry to New York (according to Tarjei Svensen)

PhosAgro won't be the only sponsor. Korotkova: "One more sponsor will be announced soon at the Baku Chess Olympiad, and more sponsors will be revealed closer to the match. There is no general sponsor (taking over the whole event), its a matrix of sponsors."
The playing hall will have room for up to 300 spectators with ticket prices up to U.S. $50. Tickets were planned to go on sale on August 17, but at the time of writing, sales on the official site haven't started yet.

Virtual reality or 360 degree broadcasting is the latest cutting edge technology that AGON intend to introduce for the WC match at the fish market...of course you are going to have to pay for it. Is it worth it? For $15 guess there isn't particularly much to lose. https://worldchess.com/2016/09/12/world ... l-reality/

It's a shame he wasn't denied access to the playing venue in Baku where he disturbed countless matches in order to maximise his photo opportunities. My irritation increased when an arbiter walked over and instead of telling him where to go joined in the photo

It was also annoying that his entourage were constantly chatting on their cellphones. I presume that they had obtained exemption from ACC requirements, but was not able to confirm this.

If arbiters are going to be challenge veteran GMs on their way back from the facilities, the same constraints that apply to players should be applied to FIDE officials. The Feller method could still be used !

What was the advice to arbiters regarding large Russians with bulging jackets chatting on phones?
