It's England v Canada in round 3, presumably with Evgeny Bareev on board 1.

Arguably a disaster in Round 3 is the last thing England needs.

Notwithststanding Mickey's heroic efforts today, if for example we get Russia in Round 3 , arguably IMHO Mickey should play to reduce the disaster risk.

I am guessing that Ian posted before he saw Leonard's post.

It's not 1991/2 anymore and Adams should be happy to play White v Bareev. Of course he will be very tired but he is accustomed to playing long games day after day, amd he has still only played once so far.

Not a bad draw but now the olympiad really begins.

There's very little discussion of China amongst the commentators, its seems like they are not very popular champions.

Mickey is playing against Canada and against Bareev. Luke is rested so it's Howell-Kovalyov, Jones-Lesiege and Short-Hansen. Should be an interesting clash. One would think England are slight favourites but it's unlikely there will be much in it.

Other pairings in the Open event:- Wales-Iraq, Jersey-Faroe Isles, Scotland-Ivory Coast, Ireland-Bolivia and Guernsey-Mauritania.

In the women's event, England play Iceland which looks a winnable match, Scotland have Norway, Ireland-Algeria and Wales-Jordan.

I think that in the UEFA soccer tournament a few weeks ago England-Iceland also looked like a winnable match.

What's the kick-off time?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

At the risk of sounding like a fanatical England supporter, we do seem to outgrade our opponents on all boards in both matches. Thus to lose one team will need to play like England footballers against iceland :) ??

In the World Senior Team Champs in June the England match against top seeds Iceland proved to be very winnable :P

Adams has a nice edge from the predictable French 3 Nd2 c5 start, the usual routine for both him and Bareev. Mickey seems to have tricked him into an unusual sideline for which the precedent is a 1991 Ehlvest-~Andersson game where the black central position is a touch loose.
Nothing special yet in the other three games.

Meanwhile there is a big petition, organised by Malcolm, Jon Speelman and Judit Polgar, against the new tell the arbiter when you go to the loo rules. Lots of signatories shown on Chess24, but apparently Filatov and the Russians are in favour of the rule. Good story, set to run.
