What I find interesting is board 49: KSA - Slovakia

Chess is banned in Saudi Arabia - still amazes me they send a team to the event.

It isn’t, which makes it less amazing.

Maybe I should have chosen my words a bit better:

The Grand mufti has declared at the beginning of the year that chess is forbidden hence makes sending a team from Saudi Arabia a hypocritical move.

I’m aware of the story that you’re citing. You might want to do some more research on it.

Living in an islamic country currently (I do live in the Middle East  ) I do understand that the Grand mufti's word carries very little weight in the eyes of the law although some would say that he has actually some great influence!!!

Hence my comment earlier!!!

Then it must be still more amazing that they hold international FIDE rated events in their own country.

The pairings look a little odd for seeds 4,5 and 6. They all seem to have white on odds and their opponents don’t seem to be in the correct sequence either.
I wonder why England isn’t playing Zimbabwe?

Good luck to Chris anyway.

Horrible number of first round defaults. I shall never understand why these teams get put into the draw when it is known that they have not come through the airport.
