Followed by a draw with black to see him progress to the final where he'll play Swiercz.LawrenceCooper wrote:Gawain 1up albeit that doesn't tell the whole story

One of the new generation of very strong Polish players, particularly dangerous at rapid and blitz.Jonathan Rogers wrote:So, who is Dariusz Swiercz?

Polish GM 2636, reserve for their Baku olympiad team where he scored 6.5/8.Jonathan Rogers wrote:So, who is Dariusz Swiercz?
Had the better of a draw (should have won) with Black against Gawain in the preliminary Millionaire tournament.

They haven't started yet, one of the other tie-breaks was 4-3 with all white wins last time I looked.Nick Grey wrote:Who won?

An especially cruel one too. Pressure does nasty things to people
The online computer was being utterly rubbish but did still manage to point out as forced mate in 22 or something for Gawain a few moves beforehand.

Ouch! After what looked like a decent game by both sides given the pressure, time control etc but one where Gawain was always the player who was better/winning etcNickFaulks wrote:and it's a selfmate

No, it was a helpmate.NickFaulks wrote:and it's a selfmate
A self-mate is when you FORCE the opponent to mate you.
Tragic to watch this live when Gawain was well ahead on time and his opponent apparently helpless.
66 Rh7+! Nxh7 67 e7 was clearly winning even if he didn't find the forced mate in 15 or whatever.
68 Ke1 was still probably winning according to the online engine and it was still possible to draw with 70 Kf1 running away with the K to the left.
Second game with Swiercz White due to start at half past with Gawain now needing a win.

Pity how it ended, but 15,000 dollars isn't bad pay for a week's work. Well done, Gawain.
