There isnt a book called
Nigel Short Teachs Chess I think you/Robert means Learn Chess with Nigel Short

While looking around for examples of such games, I found their 1980 game from the British Championships in
The Spectator.
Apparently, Robert offered a draw with "the imperishable words":

Joshua and Chris - many thanks for your help. Yes, I had a feeling I'd got that book title wrong but hadn't time to check. Chris, thanks for reminding me of that memorable sound bite from 1980. I might use that in the official Twitter feed.

P.S. When I approached the board where Nigel and Robert were about to start their game today, I asked them, "is this the play-off for the 1979 British Championship?"

The 1978 and 1979 BCM report the results of the Charlton Congresses. Nigel's participation isn't mentioned, but Robert certainly played in the 1979 edition as he is named as finishing equal second. Charlton took place in July before the British. Nigel's book is from 1993, so a tie-in with the match at the Savoy.

The book I have just dredged out from the darkest recesses of my chess library has the title (once I had blown the dust off) Nigel Short on Chess. But it was a revised version of a book originally published in 1989 and this one is dated 1993 - no doubt to coincide as Roger suggests with the Kasparov match.
And there is a fragment from a game Bellin-Short Charlton 1977. You'll have to make do with Forsyth notation, I am afraid. This is the position after Nigel's 18th move as Black : R3R1K1: 1PB2PPP; P1N1BQ2; 3p4; p1n1P3; 1qn1p2p; 1p2b1p1; r1b3k1. In this position Nigel points out that he has moved all of his pieces to the Queen side and thus gets done on the other side with 19 Bh6 dc3 20 Bg6 Nd8 21 Bg7 1-0. A nice finish for Robert.

John, I was more concerned as to whether I could remember Forsyth notation but that's the position right enough and, as you say, a nice finish.

Nigel has finished his game with Robert (which wasn't on a live board), telling me that it was a "triumph for youth". I showed him this position and he remembered it. Thanks for your help, John, much appreciated.

Nobody to blame but himself, I guess, but it does remind me that I get irritated by scoresheets where the columns aren't a multiple of five. Anybody else similarly afflicted?
