Think so. White had an awfully difficult choice between 64 f4 and the move played 64 Kh4. In the first line 64 .. c5 is difficult to meet with ..c4 to follow. In the second line, White is going to struggle to hold the h pawn which was the reason for playing Kg5 in the first place.

Well, Ivanchuk has selected a very slow way of getting the King to the Kingside!

Maybe White had to try 69 f4.

Short v Bellin in round 2; I doubt if either of them will be delighted with that pairing. Pleased to see that Alan Tate got his draw.

I can find 4 previous games.

(Short v Bellin) British Championship 1979 round 11, 19 move draw. Didn't that draw give Bellin the British Championship in the absence that year of tie break matches?

(Bellin v Short) Hastings 1980 round 13, 11 move draw

(Short v Bellin) British Championship 1981 round 10, win for Black in 38 moves

(Bellin v Short) British Championship 1987 , win for Black in 43 moves.

For the first three, Bellin was the established player and Short the promising junior. By 1987, Short was a world class GM and Bellin "just" one of many British IMs.

I expect it would be because they don't have enough DGT Boards to cover the entire tournament. Jack Rudd and others are inputting games as they finish and anything particularly interesting is being flagged.

Poser for chess historians - Nigel Short thinks he first played Robert Bellin at the Charlton Open in about 1978 but is not sure about the date. Needless to say, I don't have my chess magazine library to hand in Gibraltar and was wondering if someone could find out. Robert thinks their game appeared in Nigel's book Nigel Short Teaches Chess, so that would be a good place to start looking. Thanks in advance.
