2017 FIDE Women's World Championship (Tehran)

The opening ceremony for this already controversial event in Tehran is on Friday 10 February with the opening round on 11-13 February so starting a new thread for this. The pairings are up with the slight favourite being Ju Wenjun though as we know from previous events it can turn into a lottery. The board 17 pairing is quite sad, Cristina-Adela Foisor having died recently.

Strange that there is no provision for Foisor to be replaced, or was it at too short notice for that?

Cristina-Adela Foisor died on 22 January 2017. According to Wikipedia, because the pairing had already been announced, there is going to be no replacement.

FIDE Press release issued today. The highlights:

Format:

The first five rounds consist of mini-matches of two games with 90 minutes per 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with bonus 30 seconds per each move. The final match consists of four games.

Tie-Breakers:

If the match score is tied, the winner is determined by an accelerating tiebreak system: two rapid games of 25 minutes + 10 seconds per move. If the score remains equal, the players proceed to another two games with a slightly faster time control – 10 minutes + 10 seconds per move. If these games do not determine the winner as well, then there are two blitz games: 5 minutes + 3 seconds per move. Finally, if the score is still even, there is an Armageddon game: White has five minutes, Black has four minutes, and a three-second increment per move after the move 61.

Prize Fund:

The total prize fund of the Championship is US $450,000. Every player gets $3750, those who make it to round two get $5500, for round three it is $8000, round four $12,000, round five (semifinals) $20,000, the silver medalist $30,000, and the winner $60,000.

Schedule:

Round 1 – February 11-13, Round 2 – February 14-16, Round 3 – February 17-19, Quarterfinals – February 20-22, Semifinals – February 23-25, Finals – February 27 – 3 March. Closing ceremony – 4th of March. February 26 is a day off. All games start at 1500h local time (Tehran is GMT + 3.30 so 11.30am GMT).

I was looking at the results on chess24 where there is a line through players eliminated that makes ratings beginning 24** look like 21**.

Not big rating differences in most of those cases?

I was doing my best to get to the list; nobody else made the effort and I couldn't find a clear list of them anywhere.

Finding it difficult to find out what's happening with these championships on any site at the moment so wasn't surprised to see Emil Sutovsky's statement on FB just now:

"Participants of the Women's World Championship in Tehran have to be dressed according to standards introduced in 1979. The broadcast of the tournament is about a standard of 1997. Progress."
