Will we have a thread for the games?

Interesting bit at the end of this article (though the 'chess as a sport' bit seems overly optimistic):

https://en.chessbase.com/post/press-con ... -in-london
After the press conference, World Chess CEO Ilya Merenzon admitted that preparing for the tournament has not been without its challenges:

"Central London has so few venues that could have housed the Championship for the month. It was almost an impossible task. We are very lucky to have found the College here — and the funny thing is that the building was built as an art school, and chess and art are seen as being together so it is a very special arrangement."

In Britain, chess is not always seen as a sport but Merenzon is sure that this Championship can help change peoples perspectives and simply said. "I am completely sure that once the event is over, chess will be recognised as a sport."

Anything Ilya Merenzon says can be assumed to be doubtful on the grounds that Ilya Merenzon said it.

Current Unibet prices: Carlsen 9/4 on, Caruana 9/5.
And as we kick off, it's Carlsen 9/4 on still, Caruana 7/4.

And Carlsen played 1.c5 in response to Caruana's 1.e4. Hmm.

I remember the days when it was de rigueur that Game 1 in a match was a short draw. Move 73 and no signs of hands being shaken. A long slog watching this but made worthwhile by Grischuk & Svidler's commentary.

I don't suppose I was the only one to think 34 Nh2 was a good time to get on with some work and be surprised to find a game still going on when checking up a bit later.

...and finally drawn after exactly seven hours of play.

I did wonder if having tried to squeeze blood out of a stone for that long, Carlsen would try to beat the 1978 AK v VK move record.

A missed opportunity for Carlsen (definitely, he will have been disappointed not to win that), or a psychological boost for Caruana (maybe), or a sign of things to come for Caruana (he will get his chances, but will need to play better than that - first game nerves)? Maybe a bit of all that.
