MSA Masters, Doha

Five England-based players, including me and Keith Arkell, are playing in the MindSportsAcademy Masters in Doha at the moment.

What bizarre results!
How normal is it to have one third of the players (16 out of 46) no show? Or have a player (Ali Almehaid) lose to a GM in the first round, not turn up for the next three rounds, leaving his opponents hanging, and not be kicked out of the tournament? Also unusual to have two players representing FIDE, although only one of them turned up to play.

I won this rather Arkellesque game this afternoon:
I very much liked Keith's comments on this game on FB: "That game definitely meets my approval. As I said when doing a piece in the 1980s on Ulf Andersson's style, for KIngpin, it's uncanny how often you end up with two connected central passed pawns when setting out to make favourable pawn exchanges from the start. 'Arkell's hierarchy of pawns' states that 'Unless one or both players castle Queenside, the pawns increase steadily in value from the a up to the f'."

No PGN, no. The tournament was, for whatever reason, not using duplicate scoresheets.

CHESS: Mindsports Academy held the WORLD'S BIGGEST Bughouse tournament here in Doha! There were 4 grand masters, and international master and lots of players having fun! Prize pool of $3000 has never been seen before in a bughouse tournament.

Just a lazy copy and paste from my facebook wall:
'Finally the blitz, and so I was able to flex my muscles a bit: in a field which included 7 GMs, I was first = with 7.5/9'
Jack also had a chance to join Tamas Fodor and me but, sadly, lost in the last round.

Congratulations on a great result, Jack, but in the circumstances it is perhaps just as well that it wasn't a GM norm.

Not directly, I think - but FIDE expects all title norm events to submit a complete pgn, and there are lots of occasions (as I often realise too late) where a complete pgn enables you to construct a crosstable retrospectively to prove a title norm, or even just to prove the pairings were legitimate - or that the tournament actually took place! If someone obtained a norm in Doha and it was challenged, it might be an issue.
