- Which year was the tournament held in England, and where?
Bath 1973. It was that extremely rare event for chess that attracted more spectators than the venue (Guildhall) could reasonably accommodate. Teams were 8 to play from a squad of 10. The Soviet Union turned up with all the household names. You might pass someone who looked a bit like Petrosian in the street, and realise it was actually him in the flesh.
Though not - to the sorrow of many then and since - Leonid Stein, who was found dead in a hotel just as the USSR team was about to depart.

Round 9 sees the women finish against Lithuania with top board likely to play a big part in deciding the destination of the board 1 medals: http://chess-results.com/tnr304485.aspx ... =30&wi=984
Board medals are on rating performance I think regulations

Hi, you mean this one

I guess they do! Thanks for this.

I thought I had been following the womens' event quite closely, but it must have been my imagination. I would have posted about Jovanka's excellent performance beforehand, otherwise.

Chris asked:

- Which years did the England Open team (twice) and the England Women's team (twice) come third?

And I really don't know. I wonder whether sometimes in the past, the European event has been held in "even" number years, the same as the Olympiads - for some reason "Debrecen 1992" shrieks from my memory (when Short lost to Kasparov with White; not ideal with the prospect of the world championship match the following year). Perhaps we still came third, I don't know. I remember they also played in Lucerne 1989 and came nowhere (or at least, so it seemed at the time, it would probably look quite respectable today), thus prompting a Nigel Davies article in CHESS suggesting they were drinking every evening.

I will say probably twice in the 1990s for the men; and twice definitely, surely, when else but in the 1990s for the women.

Is there anything wrong with www.olimpbase.org/worldteam/euro_results.html this source?

EDIT: apparently the answer is yes, the link doesn't work. Can't see what I've done wrong, but here it is separately:

Luke with one of those positions you had when a much stronger junior than you played the London or the Colle.

Ah, I see we made third in Skara, something perhaps overshadowed in English minds by you-know-what-game.

But I also see that the event didn't take place between 1992 (when we did indeed finish third) and 1997 (winners)! Most likely we would have had at least another third place during that time otherwise. Can anyone explain the long gap? Did it really take five years to agree on appropriate names for the Yugoslav teams?

In the not-so-old days, people would get such positions (as White) against computers, who would think they were doing fine, until the mating threats suddenly appeared. With a +3 assessment for White at move 23, even with level material and only one White piece beyond the fourth rank (but yes, obviously, a knight on e5) those days are well gone.

Oh, well. Always look on the bright side of life :(

We may not have matched our seed. But we did finish Top Island, putting Crete, Iceland and the Faroes in their place

And we have established a high water mark to motivate the swarms of ambitious younger players clamouring for selection. Oh, wait...

Saving your worst till last (both teams) does not a happy journey home make.
