Candidates Tournament in Berlin March 2018

Post by JustinHorton » Mon Sep 11, 2017 11:23 am

Agon press release

If you're wondering "will they give up on the stupidity of trying to prevent other sites broadcasting the moves?" the answer appears to be "Good Lord no".
The Tournament will be broadcasted exclusively on worldchess.com and on media partners’ sites.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

What is going on in that picture?

"Over 23% of Germans play chess regularly"

Thanks, I thought that was Breznhev but didn't make the connection.

Next, can someone speculate on why Agon would think this the natural backdrop for the Candidates? Beats me.

Moving my comment about the World Cup to the correct thread leaves me room to give another little sigh at the ongoing taste in certain chess quarters for spouting utter cobblers about numbers of chessers.

Or less than 24% of Germans play regularly, as we might prefer (probably much less than 24% )

Good place for a few Berlin endgames though

"regularly" includes all those who 'generally play chess least once a year' according to Agon's YouGov survey from 2012.

Also it's 23% of "adults" rather than the total population, to be thoroughly pedantic

That would include all those who might load the chess playing program on their phone, tablet or laptop once a year. Popular computer games would get equally high headcounts.

Germany does have an impressive headcount of "serious" players though, those on the domestic German list or on the FIDE list as GER.

I wonder who is the likely wildcard.

The first thing I'd look at is whether there's a player from the host country who's strong enough to be the wildcard. There isn't.

"Gens una sumus"?... Just wonder if it's part in memory of Andrew Paulson?

From the timetable in the Agon press release
March 28 Wednesday – Tie Breaks/Closing Ceremony
Didn't the London Candidates determine the qualifier from the results in the main tournament without using rapidplay games?

Carlsen went through by virtue of having more losses (and wins) than Kramnik .

Though do we know who's actually getting their wallet out for this one?
