....in which 14/18 round 1 matches ended 5-1 or better; and 6/18 were whitewashes. Silly nonsense
Fair point but no different regarding one-sided matches to the early rounds in the Olympiad.

What do the sponsors of these super strong teams get out of it? I am sure they are aware that as soon as the money runs out all the stars will move to another ‘club’.

The event would benefit from having segregated professional and amateur sections, amateur defined as a chess club with no sponsor.

Part of the appeal for the amateur teams is to play against the top sides though. For players who aren't going to play in their Olympiad team it's the next best thing and the Hilsmark & Midland Monarchs teams that I have captained have loved the experience.

Day 1 report from Chess24 with Adam Ashton and Kieran O'Driscoll getting deserved mentions. The Round 2 pairings are out and once again Kramnik is not playing.

I'm surprised Vlad didn't fancy white v Nisipeanu; still no Grischuk either, though Svidler plays for the no 3 seeds

The 88th FIDE Congress is being held alongside this event and here is a report on Day 1. As you can see from the photos there are some ECForum posters present.

I played in one ECC many a year ago, and would be absolutely inclined to agree with this. One of my favourite memories from my time playing chess was at the ECC, sat no more then a few yards away from Ivanchuk playing for his team. I forget who I was playing against, or the result even, but seeing Ivanchuk play in person is certainly one of a very small number of highlights for me.

At the end of the day if people are happy to pay for strong chess players to play, and these players are happy to play, I certainly wouldn't complain at potentially having the opportunity to play against them.

Have to say that White Rose might be slightly miffed at going from 2600+ to 1600- average opposition. A gently insane yoyo :)
(It'll presumably balance out a bit in a few rounds time!).

Firstly, let me wish the English teams all the best and may they play lots of strong players and have a great chess holiday. Back in the day when I played for Wood Green and Guildford in the same event it was the National Club champions who represented England.

How are the teams chosen now?

Chessbase report on R1, R2 (live) -

http://en.chessbase.com/post/european-c ... es-all-win

To me the fly in the ointment that comes with this edition of the "European Club Cup" is that an unwholesome alliance of wider Turkish & Russian interests are coming together alongside a meeting of FIDE.

Western European clubs are, in that sense, mere pawns helping to promote the propaganda agenda of those three great autocratic powers.

Now I echo Andrew's best wishes... and his question -

Top 3 in the 4NCL, or in practice, top 3 who want to send a team. They also have to have finished in the top half, which I think is defined as the Championship pool.

Presumably the Turkish team are juniors. Evidently there's no minimum rating or strength rule.

Edinburgh were there last year. 62 teams took part.

They had to pay their own way, the boys said they had a great time.

And there was me thinking that Mamedyarov, Karjakin, Giri and team mates all meet up on a Tuesday night at their club and go for a pint together afterwards!
