Irish IM Norm Event
The Irish Chess Union will be running Norm events from the 3-7 January in Dublin. Although the GM event is full, there are two spaces available in the IM section with a 2300 average required for those 2 players. Full details here: https://www.icu.ie/events/983
These events form part of a larger festival of chess to commemorate and celebrate the life of the ICU's former Chairperson, Philip Hogarty - who died tragically aged 19 on January 1st, 2008. As well as the norm events, the ICU will be running a 50+/65+ event, a student event and the events will run alongside one of Ireland's largest junior events: the Leinster junior Championships.

The participants are listed at

and

In the GM event, some players are incorrectly labelled as Irish. That's unless the Irish Chess Union has been signing up players for change of Federation.

Re: Irish IM Norm Event
well spotted Roger... Turner now plays under the Scottish flag and Korneev the Spanish flag
also not sure why Paronyan Vahe rated 1760 is playing in the IM norm event as surely this would effect the mean rating? possibly he is a reserve and the ICU has a 2200 - 2300 player to replace him? possibly he is playing? I remember a couple of decades ago Adam Raoof ran an IM norm event and a 1900 player played (he paid a lot of money to play because of his low rating.... he finished on 0/9 but he did miss a mate in 3 against one of the IM'S)

The following rule will apply to the lowest rated opponent:Martin Crichton wrote: ↑Fri Dec 22, 2017 4:18 pmalso not sure why Paronyan Vahe rated 1760 is playing in the IM norm event as surely this would effect the mean rating?
1.46b
For the purposes of norms, the minimum rating (adjusted rating floor) for the opponents shall be as follows:
Grandmaster 2200
International Master 2050
Woman Grandmaster 2000
Woman International Master 1850

Re: Irish IM Norm Event
With the final two rounds to go, are there any norms still possible?
In the GM section, Sam Collins leads on 5.5/7, although he has a tough final day against 2 of the GMs; there might also be some IM norms sneaking under the radar in the GM section.
The IM section looks rather less promising for norm-seekers.

Sam needs a draw in the last round for 7/9 and his average is over the 2380+ required. Jessel needs 1/1 for an IM norm.Alexander Hardwick wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 12:32 pmWith the final two rounds to go, are there any norms still possible?

Although, given that he appears to have accumulated 4 IM norms already, he might not mind too much.

A nice position to be in. Hopefully the remaining rating points will follow.Alexander Hardwick wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2018 3:23 pmAlthough, given that he appears to have accumulated 4 IM norms already, he might not mind too much.

Re: Irish IM Norm Event
Sam Collins got his 3rd GM norm and Stephen Jessel his 5th IM norm in the GM norm event that concluded yesterday.
Sam and Stephen now join Joe Ryan... in the exclusive club of players that are half way there (already achieved the norm requirements)
They all now need to get their ratings up (2500 for Sam and 2400 for Stephen and Joe)
My guess is that Stephen will be favourite to get a title first following by Sam and then Joe.
on the other side of the coin Brian Kelly has surpassed the 2500 barrier but he is short on the norm side. I would also mention that Alex Lopez could be an outsider to be Ireland's first GM (born in the country)...eg he could get a double GM norm at the olympiad and is hugely talented. I am convinced that Alex will be a GM within a couple of years max.

What double GM norm?

Re: Irish IM Norm Event
I am no expert but it seems to me on comparing the Handbook now current with the previous version (valid to mid-2017) that the relevant clause has been deleted.
In the old version of the title regulations at https://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html ... ew=article it said:
I see no such clause in the new version at https://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html ... ew=article1.23b
For Olympiad, a title norm counts as 20 games; a title performance counts as 13 games.
which means 30 games in total are required from the events where norms are achieved, including olympiads.
Realistically, with respect to Irish norm prospects:
Sam Collins has a full-time job, I believe, but this excellent new result should motivate him to get to 2500 sooner rather than later.
It is now nearly two years since Stephen Jessel achieved his third IM norm but in the meantime his rating has gone down. So although I hope and believe he will get to 2400 one day he still needs to cure his time trouble addiction.
Alex Lopez could well achieve a GM norm at the next Olympiad (if he meets the right mix of opponents and plays well enough) but he will need more norms.
Brian Kelly, so far as I am aware. has not played competitive chess in many years so I don't expect him ever to get the GM title.
Are you sure Joe Ryan has three IM norms?

Joe has 4 IM norms and was close to a fifth from memory.
