European Tax Haven Championship; November 11-19

Post by David Robertson » Fri Nov 17, 2017 5:02 pm

Euphemistically (and formally) known as the European Smaller Nations Team Championship, this month it's being hosted by Andorra. Teams are:

Andorra
Cyprus
Faroe Islands
Guernsey
Jersey
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Malta
Monaco
San Marino

I'd guess Gibraltar and the Isle of Man will feel a bit miffed that they aren't 'nations' unlike, say, Jersey and Guernsey  Or maybe their standing as a depository of hot and corruptly acquired loot isn't up to snuff. Not sure how the Faroe Islands snuck onto the list; maybe they have hot and corruptly acquired haddock.

Anyways >>>> Andorra heads the list going into the penultimate (8th) round. And GM David Norwood is one main reason why

Enjoy. At least you'll learn who to turn to when planning to move your pension pot off-shore

Gib and IoM aren't FIDE members, will probably be the explanation there.

Can't they afford the sub?

Nowadays you have to be an IOC member.

Ah that's a good point. I wonder if Gibraltar (being a FIFA member) has aspirations in that respect?

Hurrah! The Faroe Islands won, undefeated in the round-robin (8-1-0) and, as far as I can tell, uncorrupted by dodgy off-shore cash. They have a GM established more recently than us (GM Helgi Ziska, 2016); play football (better than us?); and their favourite meal is chips with, ahem, fish. But they are not (yet) members of IOC

Spain has managed to veto that, and the IOC has refused to allow the matter to go to CAS. For so long as FIDE maintains its one-sided love affair with the IOC, that's the end of that.
