Ah, we were mystified that Dan F withdrew from Reykjavik after Round 8, presumably he wanted an extra day's rest?

Ponomariov losing in the first round perhaps the standout result so far

Gawain in 7-way tie for the lead on 5/6 after a win with Black. Rest day tomorrow I think.
Luke also won to reach 4.5. Daniel drew and Ravi won so they are on 3/6.

Whoops; mental arithmetic let me down.
So Daniel is on the same score as 13-year-old Irish player Tarun Kanyamarala whose 12-year-old sister Trisha is also in the tournament (on 1/6).

Re: European Individual 2018
<t>A great round today for Gawain Jones and Luke McShane.
Gawain launched a sacrificial attack against Ernesto Inarkiev (he of Carlsen double check infamy) which should have led to perpetual check. Inarkiev either miscalculated or wanted more, and the upshot was that the attack sprouted wings, Gawain won the queen with the odd material balance of Q+R v 2Bs and 2Ns, and still mated the Russian king on the h file.
Meanwhile Luke won a polished game against 2559-rated Alexei Fedorov.
Gawain now has 6/7 and will likely be the sole leader as the only two still playing on 5/6 are in a drawn ending. Luke will then be in a big tie for second on 5.5/7.
Thus 2.5/4 or even 2/4 in the final rounds should put them both among the 23 qualifiers for the next World Cup, and if it continues to go well they can try for European championship medals in the last couple of rounds.</t>
A fine day for English chess!

Yes, Gawain is going great and is in the sole lead. He will play Dubov with Black tomorrow.
There are ten players half a point behind, including Dubov and Luke, who will have White against Najer.
This is an 11-round tournament so it's premature to count chickens.
Daniel and Ravi are on 3/6, and our young Irish-Indian star Tarun Kanyamarala is also on 3/6 after drawing with an IM today.
His sister won today to double her score.

Re: European Individual 2018
Round 7 (of 11) was played today and Gawain Jones is currently in the sole lead on 6. Luke McShane is one of ten players half a point behind.
The top 23 players will qualify for the 2019 FIDE World Cup.
Our young Irish-Indian star Tarun Kanyamarala is on 3/6 after drawing with an IM today. He gets another IM (his sixth titled opponent) tomorrow.
His Rp is back over 2300 and this is extremely impressive, though such a long tournament can be tiring for very young players and we mustn't be disappointed if his final result is not quite as good.
More good news: his sister Trisha won today against a 2100 Russian to double her score (now 2/6) and has an Rp over 2000.
EDIT: Apologies for duplication of some info: this post was meant to go on the Irish bulletin board.

Safe draw for Gawain. Luke got away with one, 22...Rxg2 looked like a crusher, but after Najer missed that he is worse.

Round 9 pairings are out.
Gawain Jones ENG 2651(6.5) v Radoslaw Wojtaszek POL 2738 (6.5)
Maxim Matlakov RUS 2707 (6) v Tamir Nabaty ISR 2690 (6.5)
Anton Korobov UKR 2664 (6) v Luke McShane ENG 2647 (6.5)
David Navara CZE 2737 (6) v Daniil Dubov RUS 2701(6)
Sanan Sjugirov RUS 2652 (6) v Rauf Mamedov AZE 2709 (6)
Wojtaszek, Nabaty, and McShane have all had five Whites, so two of them were downfloated.
With three rounds left, both Gawain and Luke are within a point of assured World Cup qualification and are serious contenders for European championship medals.

Jones v Wojtaszek drawn by repetition in 13 moves after half an hour's play. No surprise really, pragmatic decision.

Re: European Individual 2018
I don't blame Gawain for taking a day off at this point, against a top class opponent. I hope this isn't his plan for the final two rounds as well - you get an awful lot of that in the European Championships.Leonard Barden wrote: ↑Mon Mar 26, 2018 12:34 pmJones v Wojtaszek drawn by repetition in 13 moves after half an hour's play.
