Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa makes his 2nd GM norm, at the age of 12, here in Heraklion, Crete:

His strategy seems to have been to draw with Black against the three GMs and bash up everyone else.

Yes, he played correctly against us and didn't take any chances ( actually, he was White against GM Nokolaidis - but even then he played very solidly). HIs remaining 5.5/6 was a bit bumpy in parts, eg Adam Taylor was doing well early on, and so was one of the young lads who made an IM norm. In fact that kid, one Georgios Mitsis, was doing rather well when they agreed to a draw.

RP looked pretty solid at Reykjavik as well, although any risks looked well-calculated, and he had a good demeanour at the board. Nodirbek Abdusattorov was playing as well and I have written a report for a club magazine, where I (rather unhelpfully) say, "Remember these names".

I see he's playing in the fantastically strong IoM Masters

Given that's not until October, he'll presumably be a GM by then.

Best of luck to anyone facing him in his next rapid tournament with his current rating: https://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=25059530

Pfft! I hope someone advises the young lad that he can do very much better than Webster University, scholarship or not, PR stunt or not. Webster is a 2nd tier (regional) university, ranked #23 among Mid-Western universities. You won't have heard of the other 22 either. And then there's Polgar-Truong. Another reason to steer well clear

For Pragg the attraction will be a chess team with GM Le Quang Liem, GM Ray Robson, GM Illia Nyzhnyk and GM Alexander Shibanov. I don't see any evidence that he is academically and culturally gifted like, say, Vincent Keymer or Hou Yifan.

He just needs to work on his FIDE rapid rating now  https://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=25059530

The problem, not only for Pragg but for many other juniors including English juniors, is that the K=40 coefficient which applies in classical games for all under-18s rated below 2300, excludes rapid and blitz.

This means that a junior who has a low initial rapid or blitz rating when still weak cannot raise it quickly. if he or she makes fast improvement.

Pragg's first rapid rating was in 2012 when he was only seven years old, and this has deflated his rapid rating ever since.

It should be something that the secretary of the Qualifications Committee ought to have the influence to sort out.

Don’t think it’s really related to K-factor, simply that for many people participation in FIDE rated blitz and/or rapid tournaments just isn’t that common. Given that individual rapid/blitz ratings are by default their standard play FIDE rating at time of first tournament, the obvious solution would be to “reset” the ratings after a fixed period of inactivity. Either directly reset to their Standardplay rating, or perhaps to their St rating +/- (say) 100pts should the differential be greater.
