Congratulations to Sam Shankland on a brilliant +6 to become US champion ahead of Caruana on +5.

Annie Wang is busted but may yet be champion if Goletiani holds Paikidze.

Paikidze offered a draw as soon as she saw the Wang result and Goletiani (who was slightly better but low on time) accepted.
So tiebreak tomorrow.

Caruana said in his interview that he thought +4 would be good enough for a tie.
Even after losing in round 4 he still felt confident that he could win the event and he hadn't expected the loss would be so costly.

Mike Klein report report on Sam Shankland's victory and he now rises above 2700 and is 45 in the world on the live ratings. If you read Shankland's forward to Aagard's recent publication Thinking Inside the Box then his win perhaps may not as surprising as it looks. He worked a lot on candidate moves with Aagard and that work really seems to have paid off and taken him to the next level.
