Whereas I hope we do. Malcolm will get excellent advice on such matters from that source.

While I am fairly sure who is being referred to here, may I point out that discussing things in this way does tend to exclude the large number of forum readers who will not know.
I apologise to Forum readers. It had not occurred to me that it was not obvious, but it is apparent from the posts after Justin's that it should have done.

I was referring to Chris Fegan.

Chris has a lot of experience of municipal election campaigns. He has served as a Labour councillor on Chelmsford Borough Council and on Essex County Council, both of which are predominantly Conservative.

I don't know for certain that it was he to whom Malcolm was referring, but he fits the description better than any of the other people mentioned.

Maybe not the "proved right every time" bit though eh

Many people who compete regularly in elections, especially when spread over many years, will have been beaten on occasion, sometimes heavily. All the more so if their approach is generally to stand so that their point of view is heard and given a chance to be voted upon, as opposed to substantially tailoring an election pitch to whatever the electorate at that time want to hear.

Don’t really see a contradiction in that and being able to accurately predict (in private if necessary) the likely course of a campaign and realistic prospects of success.

On the other hand predicting that any election will have “twists and turns”, especially if including potentially illusory ones which with hindsight don’t have much effect on the final result, isn’t necessarily the height of sagacity.

I always enjoy Richard's interventions. You know they are going to make sense.

Insofar as the events leading up to the 2015 AGM can be called an election campaign it's curious that such an experienced politician should have succeeded in putting so many backs up among the electorate. I shall resist the temptation to say more.

I assume the advice Malcolm received was that the establishment ticket was going to win, so if he wanted to make a difference that was the one to be on. Not a difficult call to make.

Thanks David; it wasn't obvious to me as I was thinking it meant someone with experience of FIDE election campaigns, which would surely be more relevant

Am I correct that the Russian Chess Federation was meeting yesterday to decide formally who to nominate/support?

I can see why you might think that.

Well indeed, the distance between municipal campaigns and FIDE elections seems so great that experience in the former seems virtually irrelevant. I remain as sceptical as I was yesterday that posters here have correctly guessed Malcolm's advisor, and clearly others are too.

I would have thought that the adviser might be more of a D.J.

Someone well acquainted with the inner workings of FIDE and would certainly strike the right notes.

Sorry, what is a D.J.? I doubt it means someone who plays records.
These private discussions are becoming less and less accessible for most of us.

I would suspect a reference to a former FIDE Executive Director.

So we can rule out Ernie Lazenby then. And David Pardoe

I'm a D.J. by the way :-)

But you must admit, much more interesting than the first 20 pages or so of discussion. :P
