Amazed and impressed he managed to win that.
Presumably Black thought the simplification from 4v2 to 2v1 would lead to a draw, but it didn't.

Goodness, that sounds bad. I hope Ding Liren recovers well and can continue his recent fine form. I suspect, though, that he might not be able to finish playing in the tournament, and at the very least it may affect his results. Depending on the exact nature of the injury and the surgery, he will almost certainly be on crutches and in a leg cast or in a wheelchair or otherwise restricted in his movements while it heals. Sitting at a chessboard can be difficult in such circumstances (remember Tony Miles playing his games lying on his front! that was a back issue - there must be examples of people playing on after being treated for broken bones, whether arm or leg, or even the more common dislocation injuries).

EDIT: Couple more details here. Apparently the cycling accident was before the cooking competition, and Ding Liren carried on, limped into the venue, sat and chopped vegetables while Anand cooked, and they won the competition. But sounds like he should have gone to the hospital if (as it turned out) surgery was required.

Certain he won't be fit to play on. Inconceivable doctors would discharge him a day after surgery. Reckless if they did. A minimum period of post-op observation would be routine. Then an assessment of self-care. He'll not be ready to play for some while.

And so it came to pass
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

That puts the standings I think at:

Carlsen 3/4
Karjakin 2.5/4
Aronian, So 2/4
Anand, Nakamura 1.5/3
Mamedyarov 1.5/4
Caruana, MVL 1/3

Round 5
Carlsen - Anand
Caruana - Karjakin
Mamedyarov - Nakamura
MVL - Aronian

Caruana beat Karjakin and other games drawn, so Magnus a point clear again

The nice thing about this tournament is that play starts at 3.30pm UK time but still doesn't interfere with any dinner plans.

Two uneventful draws today between Anand-Mamedyarov & Aronian-Caruana but Carlsen is a pawn down against So and Nakamura-MVL is still going but looking rather blocked.

Nakamura-MVL also drawn but Carlsen looks completely busted against So.

With Ding Liren's withdrawal, the three draws from rounds 1-3 (with Nakamura, MVL and Anand) are discounted and the other players get a rest round (Caruana in round 4, So in round 5, Karjakin in round 6, Carlsen in round 7, Aronian in round 8 and Mamedyarov in round 9).

So pointed out that though he is only half a point behind with a game in hand, he did lose one of his Whites (the same applies to Carlsen and Mamedyarov).

Thanks for that Christopher. I should have realised it was to do with the Ding Liren withdrawal.

Seemingly from nowhere Anand has joined Carlsen & So in first equal place on 3.5/6 by beating MVL with black.
