International Round Up 4/8/09

After the first week at the British in Torquay David Howell and Gawain Jones lead the Championship with 5/6, a half point clear of Stephen Gordon, Simon Williams, Peter Wells, Danny Gormally, Mark Hebden and Lawrence Trent. Jovanka Houska is the leading woman on 4/6 with Susan Lalic on 3 and Sarah Hegarty and Sheila Dines on 2.

Congratulations to the following winners in the junior events:

Under 16s Martin Brown 5.5/7. Sheila Dines won the Under 16s girls title with 4/7.

Under 15s (part of Under 16 competition) Akash Jain 5.5/7 Abigail Pritchard won the Under 15 girls with 3.5/7.

Under 13s Felix Ynojosa 6/7. Radha Jain & Maria Wang shared the Under 13s girls title with 4.5/7.

Under 11s Tarun Malhotra 6/7. Anna Wang won the Under 11 girls title with 5.5/7.

Danny Gormally and Gawain Jones won the first rapidplay with 5.5/6 and Alexander Cherniaev won the second with 5.5/6.

In other events Dave Ledger leads the Major Open with 5.5/6 and Craig Hanley won both the am pm and 5 round week 1 events. Alexander Cherniaev also played in the pm event but a last round loss to Alexandra Wilson saw him finish outside the prizes.

Finally, Sabrina Chevannes continued her comeback but a last round loss in the weekend open meant she missed out on first place. However, a tournament performance of 184 should give the England selectors a timely reminder of her talent. The crosstable of the event is at: http://www.britishchess09.com/events/atkins.htm
