Re: Batumi Olympiad
Stuart Conquest would be an excellent choice for captain IMHO.

Very pleasing to see Alex on TAP. Let's all hope that they are allowed to do their job and run the Olympiad in a sensible fashion.

For the ignorant among us, what is TAP? Not dancing presumably?

Interesting to note the inclusion of Heinz Herzog of Swiss Manager fame.
As the Pairings Arbiters are the same people as appear in the TAP list I would guess TAP stands for something like Team Arbiter Pairing. Presumably Heinz Herzog is a FIDE National Arbiter.

Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

TAP stands for Technical Administrative Panel.
I shall try to post more fully later.

The teams are out. USA are the top seeds in the Open section which is the first time since the break up of the Soviet Union and clearly are heavy favourites to defend their title. Carlsen not playing but Anand back after a break of over 10 years. England are 8th seeds, Ireland 65th Scotland 68th and Wales 106th.
In the Women's event Russia are the favourites, Ukraine second favourites and China, in the absence of Hou Yifan, only third. England come in at 30th seeds, Scotland 68th, Wales 71st and Ireland 88th.

I see Ben Hague (ex Rochdale, Oldham, Bradford 4NCL) is playing for New Zealand possibly on top board by the look of it

Re: Batumi Olympiad
Clearly those seedings cannot be final. As hosts Georgia probably have leeway to enter late. Since they are allowed two teams, I believe, the decision about their composition may take them a little longer.LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Thu Aug 09, 2018 1:27 pmGeorgia seem a notable absentee from both listsChris Rice wrote: ↑Thu Aug 09, 2018 12:48 pmThe teams are out. If there's an odd number of entries, they are allowed 3. When Kirsan was still in charge as President and Russia were the hosts, there were 5 Russian teams.Tim Harding wrote: ↑Thu Aug 09, 2018 1:31 pmSince they are allowed two teams, I believe, the decision about their composition may take them a little longer.
FIDE have yet to be convinced by the 4NCL solution to odd numbers of teams which is holding triangular matches.

Ben Hague reached 216 in the July 2010 ECF list. His current FIDE rating of 2404 is impressive (equivalent to 227 ECF).Mick Norris wrote: ↑Thu Aug 09, 2018 1:28 pmI see Ben Hague (ex Rochdale, Oldham, Bradford 4NCL) is playing for New Zealand possibly on top board by the look of it
Spotted another couple of players with an England connection:
- Martin G. Walker (210 in January 2016 ECF list; 2078 in August 2018 FIDE list; FM title; playing in the South Korea team).
- Lewis Martin (193 in July 2018 ECF list; 2098 in August 2018 FIDE list; playing in the International Chess Committee of the Deaf [ICCD] team).
Does anyone know if Martin Walker playing for South Korea is a new thing, or has he played for them in the past?
(EDIT: May have answered my own question: Martin Walker transferred from ENG to KOR in 2015.)
