It would have been a somewhat radical solution to what is England's biggest problem (board two), time after time.
As far as I can see, the registration order is Mickey, Luke, David, Gawain, Nick

I can't say that was what I was expecting, not that I have given it much thought

Would that have been your chosen board order?

It is very hard to know what should be done about board two. You do want someone solid, but we have only a selection of time trouble addicts and players who lose more often than they might with White, and thus a serial record of underperformance on board two which might well be self-fulfilling, and making everyone a bit reluctant to take it on. Maybe that plays a part in explaining why the baton has now fallen to Luke.

I've said before that whom we really want on board two is Sadler, but we are where we are. Nor am I sure how much even he wants it - he would want to take off work oceans of time to prepare. Luke, as we know, tends to trust that he can play himself into form.

But since you ask, I would not have picked Luke, who has most consistently underperformed when playing for England out of all of them, unless perhaps there is some unusual reason, eg if he has had taken a month off work to prepare, which I assume he has not.

Maybe the best answer would be Gawain, who at least proved solid enough wth White at Wijk aan Zee. It is not the most inspiring reasoning, I know. But think of it like this - our most difficult matches are those where Adams is Black on 1, and it is of primary importance that we do not come under pressure and risk losing on board two (where we will be White). In these matches, we might rather just look for the full point with White on board four.

According to
http://chess-results.com/tnr368908.aspx ... NG&flag=30
there are 185 Open teams of which 7 (Nigeria, Pakistan, Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Somalia, Burundi, Congo) are either no-shows or late arrivals.
Of course, there are also no Bulgarian teams this time round following recent shenanigans.

Aside from the 1976 Eastern bloc boycott of Haifa, which was the last one they missed? Pre-WW2 I would imagine.

I like Luke on 2. My reasoning is that he is the most volatile player. He can just as easily beat a 2700 as lose to a 2450, therefore he may as well do that on bd 2 and take out some big fish along the way

There seems to have been some drama with the US team arriving late, but - due to the round having begun late anyway - not so much so as to be defaulted.

Well, David Howell has won but you wouldn't say that boards 1, 3 and 4 are trivial if we are to achieve 4-0.

Ukraine won't, as Ivanchuk has conceded a draw

Excellent result for Andrew Kayonde from Zambia who played very solidly.

I might have thought that, if only Luke's performances were as good as "volatile" when playing for England. Alas, they are not. He has found it much easier to lose to 2450s than to beat 2700s.

Let's hope Luke is better on board 2 than board 1

He has demonstrated the ability to beat the best players in the world before elsewhere, and though his England form has been poor I don't think that will last for ever. Anyway, he has to play somewhere in the team and if his form is poor, then Englands will be too. If his form is good, then board 2 is where I would want him.

Indeed not, he'll be dropped for round two
