Ah yes - the not-so-common challenge of being downfloated to Russia - must be a while since that happened for us!

In the women's its worth noting that for Scotland Keti has now moved on to 8.5/9.

So Poland V China & Armenia V USA finish draws. England beat Russia.

So about that David Howell quote cheekily suggesting that maybe England will win Gold to prove that Nigel has been holding the team back all these years...Nick Burrows wrote: ↑Wed Oct 03, 2018 7:00 pmSo Poland V China & Armenia V USA finish draws. England beat Russia.

Not a float, but England faced Russia in 2013 in the European when both teams had a win and a loss apiece. That was a 2-2 draw.

I hope Richard's prediction comes true!
However, dropping to Match 87 for a moment, Chess-results (as well as Chess24) has Peter Rowe winning on Board 2, but unless a Tanzanian phone went off, surely it's a draw?

Would be quite ironic; Just as Short gets handcuffed to Putin's bedframe the remaining players win gold without himRichard Bates wrote: ↑Wed Oct 03, 2018 7:07 pmSo about that David Howell quote cheekily suggesting that maybe England will win Gold to prove that Nigel has been holding the team back all these years...

Re: Batumi Olympiad
Just comparing the two Russia sides, both of which had poor results early on and have dragged themselves back into it: the Open side has fourteen points, as do the women, and five teams ahead of them on points (four on 15, one on 16) whereas there are four ahead of the women (three on 15, one 16). I'm thinking the women might still win it, by beating Ukraine tomorrow and China on the last day (it's not quite that simple, I know) but the Open side might have left themselves too much to do whatever?

chessbomb shows the clock times with White only showing 18 seconds. A loss on time is plausible, especially as White was winning before he got hit with the Nc5 cheapo on move 33.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Wed Oct 03, 2018 7:11 pmPeter Rowe winning on Board 2, but unless a Tanzanian phone went off, surely it's a draw?

Re: Batumi Olympiad
Indeed, though we'll presumably not refuse to play them
Howell v Kramnik would be good with a board medal at stake (Cori is miles ahead, and now Piorun of Poland is in second just ahead of David)
Any postings on here represent my personal views

There is a trap here.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Wed Oct 03, 2018 6:38 pmAnd now there are lists for various norms (not yet populated, but maybe soon) and a list for Fide Master titles (I assume these are direct titles earned at a tournament or competitions such as Olympiads, rather than by rating):Mick Norris wrote: ↑Tue Oct 02, 2018 10:36 amNot for the first time, Roger beat me to it
There are category prizes for lower ranked teams
Lewis Martin is on the CM list
Lewis Martin (ENG) is currently on the Fide Master (FM) list!
He has been winning while the ICCD team have been losing, so should be able to keep winning. Am not clear if this means he can already claim the title, or if he needs to sustain his 2300+ performance to the end of the event? [Actually, chess-results shows his rating performance as 2294 so far with 7/9.]
Martin Walker won again, to get to 6.5/8, a 2372 performance and a gain of 57 rating points, though he already has the FM title.
[EDIT: Ben Hague also doing well, with 5.5/8 and a 2446 performance.]
The FM and CM lists on Chess-Results show those who have obained 66.67% over 9 games and 50% over 7 games respectively. At an Olympiad this used to suffice for the title.
However, as has been discussed in the Take 2 election thread, you now also need a previous or subsequent rating of 2100 or 2000 respectively.

Lewis is only a couple of decent results away from 2200 anyway.David Sedgwick wrote: ↑Wed Oct 03, 2018 8:53 pmHowever, as has been discussed in the Take 2 election thread, you now also need a previous or subsequent rating of 2100 or 2000 respectively.
Do you still win a rating as well as the title? Perhaps not, or it doesn't matter, as these days unrated players in major events are a rarity

Roger is right (not for the first time). Peter Rowe says he won on time.

The Old Gits team could only win Silver without Nigel, a few months ago, but it was closeRichard Bates wrote: ↑Wed Oct 03, 2018 7:07 pmSo about that David Howell quote cheekily suggesting that maybe England will win Gold to prove that Nigel has been holding the team back all these years...
