Dan Fernandez currently in Budapest in the GM event with Joe McPhillips leading the IM which Mark Lyell is playing in too; I assume Joe can get an IM norm

They then head for Balaton where Joe will be the highest rated player in the IM event and Dan will be the highest rated player in the GM

The IM norm is 7/9 so 1.5/2 needed (for Joe).

Since he outrates his opponent by about 350 points I think he just needs to make sure he turns up on time and leaves his mobile phone in the hotel.

Never underestimate 14 year old Indians though, he did beat 2200s in rounds 6 and 7 too.

Would this be a third norm and the IM title after Kecskemet 2015 and Coulsdon 2017?

I know Joe has the rating; I do remember there being an issue about a norm we thought he had got in a tournament, so not sure about the 2015 one

I'm not sure how you find these things out as the FIDE site isn't up to date re norms

Round 9 has been played, and Joe got the draw he needed chess results :D

He's now underway in Balaton chess24live

Very odd. Five games are being shown live on chess 24, but there are only player names for the actual positions. The summary table has blank names. Joe as top seed should be on board 1 but isn't on any of the five.

He's on board 3 https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tourn ... 8-im/1/1/3

He wasn't in their earlier version. They've changed all the names from that.

It was an eight player double round which fails on some technicality.

I think there was a forum discussion at the time.

Joe's won his last 2 games to reach 5.5/8

He is black in the final round against a 2260 rated IM; I'm not sure if a win would would be enough for a norm, but he's clearly playing well

Interesting to read his comments from last year ECF elite junior players reports

All those comments are fascinating, a real insight into how up-and-coming players (and juniors) try and improve.

I hadn't realised that Brandon Clarke had ceased to reside in the UK. (I also now see that was the report for 2016-17, submitted August 2017)

"Programme partially completed, but ended when he ceased to reside in the UK. No report received. Achieved his FM title."

Looking into this, I see reports of him playing in Australia, and he came joint 6th in the Australian Championships in January this year (was still ENG registered):

He appears to have been in Australia since 2017.

"FM Brandon Clarke is living in Australia, while still registered with England" (from March 2018, from the blogging of Shaun Press)
