Following confirmation of Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's withdrawal, I have created this second poll.

I'm wondering whether Ilyumzhinov really will be gone though. Looking at the latest Peter Doggers article on this:

"In an interview with Sport Express, Dvorkovich today hinted at a cooperation with Ilyumzhinov: "I think that a lot has been done in recent years. The team of Ilyumzhinov is doing a great job in promoting our sport all over the world. We talked with Kirsan Nikolayevich, and I expect that he will support my candidacy. He has a huge experience, which I hope to use."

Nigel took Kirsan's withdrawal well on Twitter:

"Kirsan is finally consigned to the garbage-can of history after decades of disgracefully being kept in power by @makro_chess, The Kalmyk's last blunder was nominating the non-existent Glen Stark on his ticket, rather than Elvis - who is popular. the king, & lives."

Julio Granda, Zhu Chen and Bachar Kouatly at least are all very decent players.

This presumably means that Dvorkovich has the support of the French federation. I did not expect that.

For clarification, Bachar Kouatly is:

a) a Grandmaster;

b) a rival to Florencio Campomanes and Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in the 1990s;

c) the current President of the FFE (French Chess Federation).

Campomanes hung around for years in honorary positions.

Grand Chess Tour personnel, previously split two ways, are now split three ways.

As the Chief Arbiter of the said Tour, my position is one of strict neutrality.

Hence. breaking the habit of a lifetime, I am seeking to refrain from expressing my opinion on these threads.

A minor piece of news is that Lewis Ncube, the President of the African Chess Confederation, has declared for Dvorkovich. Previously Ncube was Ilyumzhinov's only remaining supporter on the FIDE Presidential Board.

Enyonam Fumey, until recently ACC General Secretary, is the candidate for FIDE General Secretary on the Dvorkovich ticket.

Kevin Spraggett talks up the plus points for Dvorkovich:

"This group of individuals does not contain any controversy or history. Furthermore, each is likely to have strong influence on getting regional votes. I especially like the inclusion of Peru’s Julio Granda, a personal friend of my wife and I. I have no doubt that he will bring a large slice of South American votes with him."

If Latin America is really in play then we may have a contest. However, Granda Zuniga is a lone wolf and I do not know whether he even brings Peru's vote.

It would be nice to think that the Peruvian, and every other chess federation, would consider the merits of the cases made by each of the candidates and then choose which one to vote for. As they say, no votes have been cast yet.

I noticed that, but in the end, the ECF has to vote for someone, even if it is the least worst candidate (which would be Nigel in my view)

It's not actually compulsory, as I understand it.
