Was anyone here following the Wei Yi versus Inarkiev match? It was one of these fairly-common-these-days matches between a Chinese player and an invited grandmaster. Will probably help produce a World Chess Champion from China sometime soon.
Anyway, a report and the games are here:
https://en.chessbase.com/post/wei-yi-in ... match-2018
12-game match. Six at a classical time control and six at a rapid time control. Wei Yi won at both time controls, for an overall score of 7.5-4.5. Some nice tactics. Of note is that nine of the games were decisive (only three draws) and there were eight wins for White and only one win for Black. I am guessing the Carlsen-Caruana match in November may not be like that...

Thanks for the link, Chris, in which a slightly different setup is given to the one you described.

In this case the Chinese prodigy was the one who was invited -...It was one of these fairly-common-these-days matches between a Chinese player and an invited grandmaster.

Oops. Thanks for the correction, John.
I assumed that China was bankrolling/hosting these matches.
Will pay more attention to the locations!
There is a Wikipedia article on chess in China (Wei Yi is only mentioned once), but not one on chess in Russia/USSR!

The tension was unbearable as I scrolled down the list of 23 most powerful nations (from March 2017). I got to France at 6 and I was on tenterhooks as to where the UK would appear (I won't spoil it for others).

Another (short) match recently saw Ding Liren beat Topalov 3-1, maintaining his recent unbeaten run in doing so.
