Justin - Spanish tournaments (as you no doubt know) have loads of players with, as you call it, portmanteau names. Was a lot easier in the old days, not least on the pairing cards, with Arturito Pomar, Antonio Medina and Roman Toran etc

One of these days, you may see Andrew Bertil Cornelius Rudd Netshagen playing in a chess tournament. But probably not this year.

Back to the chess.......
Anand now better and Kramnik has escaped the worst, but So (who unlike them, has White) is really struggling.

One of the annoying things about ChessBomb is the Americans (not all of them, of course) who talk rubbish and are complete engine slaves - but even if one of their favourites is clearly struggling, they assume he will win.

The prize for "playing a no doubt perfectly competent opponent off the board in style" perhaps goes to MVL? Great game!

Great result by Morecambe player, FM Glenn House today, beating Indian GM Dhopade Swapnil. Only English player to beat a GM today it looks like.

Swapnil beat Short in a well publicised game a few years ago, an impressive result indeed for Glenn who is approaching veteran status now!

Glenn seems to have diversified from his once invariable 1e4 then!

Glenn's reward is to play black against Anish Giri tomorrow!

Well done, Glenn!

House on fire! Tough and talented player, Glenn, reliable performer for our 4NCL team. He won't lie down against Giri tomorrow.
Meanwhile, if Glenn's downfloat to Giri is one thing, Bianco's (2008) pairing with GM Gupta (2588) is another. As Jack Rudd has been pointing out today, it's an absurdity that, because the lowest-rated player is given a 1st round full-point bye, he now gets paired in the top half of the draw for the next several rounds, effectively wrecking his tournament
