I’m a bit behind on this thread so have only just seen the ... Qh4 in the Vienna chat. I fell into the ... Nxg3 trap myself in the last round of one of the Barbican tournaments. I’m guessing it would have been December 1991? I remember giving myself a talking to after the game. I felt a player of my strength - then 130s ECF I would think - really shouldn’t be blundering in the opening like that. I was astonished to see the Hon-van dear Sterren game published in a chess magazine not too long afterwards.

I had no idea until this thread that the trap had such a long and honourable tradition

I was told 5, it was 7 moves:

1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.f4 g6 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bb5 Nd4 6.Bd3 d6 7.Nxd4 cxd4

Oops. That’s unfortunate.

So he was playing on auto pilot intending to castle but had mixed up the move order?

The draw offer was a bit optimistic unless there was some other circumstance not yet mentioned.

Ah, a touch-move issue. I was thinking it might be a mobile 'phone thing.

Arguably the resignation is still the bigger mistake. Solid pawn for the piece and vague attacking chances in a key game?

Arguably, then abandoning the last round when still having a real chance of winning the tournament was also not optimal. Sometimes you're just totally fed up.

He had mentioned earlier in the tournament that there was a chance he may have to miss the last round anyway (!) as he had a plane to catch. I guess that made up his mind.

Grischuk just beat MVL so three ahead of Gawain now. Wang Hao still trying to beat Vishy, but doesn't look like succeeding.

CORRECTION: Grischuk was half a point behind so is level with Gawain and Xiong - and Kramnik, and probably a few others not finished yet.
