Simon WIlliams has one of the most fun games so far today. After 1 Nf3 f5 (no surprise) 2 d3 Nc6 (recommended in Demuth's recent book on the Reti) 3 e4 e5 Almasi played 4 d4 (rare) and the game continued 4...fxe4 5 Nxe5 whereupon SImon played 5...d6 which seems to be a novelty.
I don't know whether to describe this as a reversed Falkbeer Counter-Gambit ora Latvian Counter-Gambit but it's certainly not a normal Reti.
Apparently 6 Qh5+ is no good so Almasi took on c6.

It's a reversed Vienna, surely? It's 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 d5 4.fxe5 Nxe4 5.d3 with colours reversed.

Ah yes, Almasi wasted a whole tempo. Demuth actually suggests 3 d4!?

Indeed, and so 6 Qh5+ was in fact already known to be very bad. The same error of 5...Qh4+ in the (real) Vienna featured in Andrew Hon v Paul van der Sterren, Lloyds Bank 1993, when one of our 190-odd players scored an easy win against someone who had recently qualified for the Candidates (!).
Can we tease Tim as well as van der Sterren over this? My immediate thought was that maybe he wrote a book on the Vienna many years ago, but perhaps not (maybe I am confusing it with the Bishops Opening).

I am fairly sure I have a book by Tim on the Vienna but I have now reached an age where I am buying chess books that I already have so I am hardly the most reliable.

Meanwhile, why did Gawain do what he did. The knight sac just doesn't look right. I'd have hacked off the bishop on a3.

Draw for Gawain after defending R+2P v R,N.P (blocked pawn structure) from move 52 to 102.
That's the round finished unless there are any games going on the non-live boards.

I am fairly sure I have a book by Tim on the Vienna but I have now reached an age where I am buying chess books that I already have so I am hardly the most reliable.
Yes I did a Vienna book for Tony Gillam in the mid-70s so I should have spotted that shouldn't I?
Actually I only played the 5 d3 variation once, hoping to tempt the opponent into the queen check but he didn't fall for it.
All coming back to me now...
Against Paul Wallace in 1984 but he exchanged knights as in today's game and it petered out into a dull draw, so I didn't repeat the line.

I have that book.
I met 5. d3 twice in the space of a few weeks in local Aragonese chess about a decade ago. Two draws, one with 5...Nxc3 and one with 5...Bb4.
